Start this off with my 2005 987 Boxster non S

List price £35,000 (not 100% certain about that!)
Value now £8,000
Depreciation £27,000/£1,800 per annum.

However my 2009 L322 trumps this somewhat.

List price £91,000
Value now £7,500
Depreciation £83,500/£7,600 per annum.

Hoping I am at the bottom of the curve with both, Rangey might have a bit more to go. Both bought this year I might add.

Both of the one day will be weighed in for scrap.

Back in the day the worst depreciating car you could buy was a V6 Citroen XM at 65% loss in the first year.

I used to write quote engine software for a lease company and you could get some stuff to depreciate to zero in 3 years - a Tata Safari springs to mind. Stick some options on and the estate also cost more to lease than a 3 series touring (depreciation cost being part of the lease cost).

These are obviously percentage values, not absolute ££££s

Isn't it just about every car depreciates 50% in the first 3 years

I vaguely remember CL600's being particularly horrific.

I vaguely remember the BMW 760i/il (E65/E66) being regarded as one of the worst depreciating cars when new.

V6 petrol French, Italian and Ford/Vauxhall saloons used to be killers for it. Some would be worth as little as 24/25% of RRP after 3 years, not that anyone paid that for them. Boxster, Cayman and Evoque are some of the best.

A 2008 750 is £4K now from mid £60k new.

£4.7k depreciation for every year of its existence.

The two cars I currently lost after are Lexus LS600hl and L322 ffrr with one of the supercharged engines, both 90k or so new, both available now for 10k or less. Now, do I VT my Mini half way through its term next year and take the plunge or not?

It’s a tricky analysis because lots of stuff is massively discounted versus list. The last nearly new car I bought had a massive saving versus list but you didn’t have to pay a staggeringly higher amount for a new one.

Mclaren take some beating on the fastest depreciators from new in the shortest time for obvious reasons but largely because they are overpriced new.

A couple of cars I bought which stick in my mind as being major depreciators more than most was a black mint 1 owner high spec 997 Turbo S at 3 months old with a couple of hundred miles c£145k new bought for c £90k trade (from Porsche finance auction Nottingham).

Second was a mint black HSBC finance repo E46 SMG M3 Cab 1k miles at 6 months old high spec £55k new trade purchase price £32500.

M5s and M3s M4s continue to be horrific depreciators even new in the showroom lol.

I'm going to wait and see where I get a permanent teaching position after summer, and if it is very local that is the very route I'm going down!!

Excellent! Good luck. You won't regret it, take your time choosing and when bills come in, they will be cheaper than the monthly 'rent' of a modern motor. Hope all goes well for the teaching post and finding a good chariot.

Should the annual measurement of deprecitation be new Dacia Sanderos? I think my L322 is a lot close to the scrapheap than the Boxster, if I get 3 years out of it I will be pleased.

If you do take the plunge, go with the Lexus, much less likely to throw you a large bill.

On the way to work this morning I was thinking of used car salesmen.
Any other salesmen/shopowners, their stock doesn't depreciate, it is all sold brand new. Used car stock depreciates day by day without them doing a thing about it. A car that doesn't sell quickly loses a lot of value each time a new plate comes out.

Fashion stores as seasons and tastes change, only have to look at how much stock gets written down, discounted etc.
