Have a real urge to drive to China, well mongolia as I understand it’s hard to get a car into China

Anyone done this?

Think my choice would be a petrol transit van as they seem to be everywhere

For miles clocked I did more while on a holiday - in 2.5 weeks we did:

Johannesburg - Cape Town - Garden Route - Port Elizabeth - Durban - Kruger - Sun City - Johannesburg

Gave our little Renault Sandero back with an extra 8,200 km on the clock and a stoved-in front end from hitting a pack of dogs/goats on the motorway at night - £130 for the hire and £250 insurance excess was the cost!

I have driven U.K. to Thailand, route was Europe, Ukraine,Russia,Kazakhstan,Kyrgyzstan,China,Laos and Thailand. It took 10 weeks pretty full on. I did it on a motorbike. China is the most difficult as you need to employ a guide and your route has to be approved and registered prior to entry. I have heard the guides vary , some being " by the book" and no deviation from the route, the group having to travel together at all times etc. Our group was 6 motorbikes and two four wheelers, guide sat in one of the four wheelers, he was liberal and we split into three groups most days only meeting up at the overnight halt. Cost was reasonable as the guide travelled in one of the vehicles. If there had been no space in the group we would have had to pay a car and driver for the guide. Thats a car and driver to travel from their home city to meet you at the border, travel across China and then drive back to their home city. This adds a lot to the guide cost. To give you some idea of how strict the paperwork side is, one of our group had an accident resulting in a broken Femur. He was air ambulanced to Bangkok to have a hip operation. He wanted to fly his bike home to Australia. Guide insisted the bike must exit China in accordance with the planned route otherwise he would have months of explaining to the government about the.changed route. At the China Laos border the Chinese customs official made us wait around 2 hours until some one else crossed out of China, why? He needed to put a passport number against the accident bike as it left China. He could not use one passport number for two bikes so could not use one of the group. He was however quite happy to use a random travellers passport number without their knowledge.

China is interesting but you cannot decide you would like to detour to sightsee.......

Former would be Michigan, I haven't actually driven from the UK to somewhere else yet, unfortunately.

A member of the car club I belonged to when I lived out there drove back from Dubai to Germany, his route was by ferry from Sharjah to Bandar Abbas in Iran and then he drove through Iran, into Turkey and onward.... nothing too remarkable really, apart from the fact that his 4 wheeled weapon of choice was a Porsche 911 and some of the roads in Iran don't really deserve that name!

I've always liked the idea of an overland drive to Japan; Probably via Russia to Vladivostok to keep things easy, though crossing the mongolian steppes would probably be quite interesting.
