Transfer of private number plate

I'm currently in the process of buying a car that has a private reg.
number on it that the current owner doesn't want.

I have a new number on retention that I want to put on the car, seems straight forward enough, but I want to put the current number onto a retention certificate and move mine onto the car in the same transaction. Can I do this or do I need to retain the current, and then separately transfer my.number on?

I've looked on the DVLA website for guidelines but they don't talk about doing it that way. I'd prefer not to have a gap of a week or so whilst the DVLA get all confused, but also don't want to start the transfer and muck it up.

You can do it all online. Takes about 10 minutes. Take the old reg off onto retention. Put the new reg on. You will need the v5 and the retention document. You will get an email/letter you can print out to get the plates made up instantly.

So when I take the old one off I get the option to put the new one on before they allocate a completely random number? The DVLA site says when you take the old.one of they assign a number, so was concerned that If then need to wait for the new v5 before.I could put my number on

That's right

Old number to retention certificate. Random number assigned (probably the cars' original reg). Then assign your plate to it. You'll get an email confirmation of that last step, so you can get plates made up.

It will need to be taxed or SORN when you do it (I think). Wondered why mine wouldn't do it on a new car. I wasn't taxing it until the start of the month (fresh import).

No, i don’t think that’s right. You take the old number off, and the car gets assigned a new number. It’s been a while since i last did it but i don’t think you can whip a plate off and assign one yourself in the same transaction.

No, i don’t think that’s right. You take the old number off, and the car gets assigned a new number. It’s been a while since i last did it but i don’t think you can whip a plate off and assign one yourself in the same transaction.

If that's the case do I then need to wait for another v5 before I can out my own number in?
