Hire van question

A quick question for the mighty cerebra of the PH massif.
I will be selling my house and will have to empty it for vacant posession. The house is in Kendal
and I now live in the Stockport area. Do van hire companies do a reciprocal arrangement? I'd like
to pick up a vehicle in Cumbria, load it and drive my stuff to Stockport, unload and drop the van off
there. Ta.

You should be able to do a one way hire with any of the National companies . I did it a couple of years ago, picking the van up in Glasgow and dropping it off in Watford, using Enterprise. Go on the websites and see who has offices near where you’re going.
There’s an added charge but it wasn’t ridiculous.

That seems expensive. We got a large van, Friday to Monday about £220. Was 3 years ago.I used to work for one of the national rental companies and as said above, they'll whack on an extra fee for a one way. The cheapest way will definitely be to do a local rental in Kendal and just do more driving.
Be mindful of the daily mileage cap. Ours used to be 200 miles; some were more, some were less.
Depending on what your hours look like, you might find the nationals are closer in price than you think as they usually allow out of hours key drops. That will usually mean you aren't paying for a whole extra half day/day of renting.
Certainly worth looking through the options.

That's 1 way which is always going to be more expensive.I did a quote for 1 way from Lincs to Gatwick when we fly to Turkey in October (alternative to taking train/crammed into my E36) and it was £138 1 way for a Focus compared to £30 ish for a normal 1 day hire.

Possibly a silly question, but how do you intend to get to a van hire place Kendal from Stockport in the first place?
If you drive there on your own, your car will be stranded there after you drop the van off in Stockport.
If a mate / girlfriend / wife drives you there, they'll need to drive back again, which has a cost. If you go there on the train, that also has a cost.
With one way hire, you're paying the extra cost of getting yourself up to Kendal as well as the extra cost the van hire company charges. It will be cheaper and simpler just to hire a van from near your house, drive an empty van up there, load up and drive back.
Vans use more fuel than cars, bit it would have to do less than half the MPG of your car before you'd save any money by doing a one way hire, even if the company didn't charge any extra for a one way hire (unlikely)

Hello mate, having just done similar I would highly recommend you get a man and van from Gum Tree or similar. That way you get labour and none of the hire hassle for very little more. Kendal to Stockport you will find many with extra long wheel base transits £150ish
Agree with this - have done a few times now and it's much easier and less hassle. Last time I even used a "man in a van" comparison site!https://www.comparethemanandvan.co.uk/

My move is slightly complicated by two aspects. I have tenants in at present but as their business
has been torpedoed by Covid, they'll be leaving sometime soon. I also have a medical restriction
on my licence so my mate will be driving the van.
I had a man 'n' van bring the lion's share of my stuff down to Stockport. This cost £200. Tbf it was a vanfull.
To help ease the task, my tenants will help in my selling/skipping stuff as appropriate. I've asked for a
month's notice at least but I can do all my research now.
