Was doing an economy run on the way to work this morning - have a new car so seeing what the best it could be (after knowing the worst it could be
)
It suddenly occurred to me that money is like MPG... it takes you ages for your 'savings' to grow... 0.1 at a time, gradually building until you get it to a figure you are reasonably happy about.
But then, one single bad decision, or one act of frivolousness and your 'savings' tumble, way quicker than it had built up - then you are left with a depressingly low figure that either makes you think what was the point of spending, or, f
k it, it's low anyway, might as well blow it all.
i think i need to get a job that doesn't have so much commuting

I recently did a drive from Leeds, West Yorkshire to Newquay, Cornwall, a distance of 370 miles near enough.
I was driving my wifes Mini Countryman Cooper S which has three driving modes, Sport, Normal and Eco.
At the start of the trip I brimmed the tank to full and drove the whole way in eco mode with cruise control set to 70mph on motorways and no traffic of note as it was early morning.
I drove in he most effiicent gears as directed by the onboard Eco computer using Eco mode and when I arrived it told me I had saved 10 miles worth of fuel on a 370 mile trip.
It's safe to say on the return journey I just drove normally and didn't worry about it at all, it wasn't worth the worry.

Don't be daft, get a series Land Rover with a diesel engine. That way you can do about 20 mpg and never get above 55m mph. It will make a lot of noise but not the sort a TVR will make. And best of all its not even comfortable. But it is kind of addictive You need a TVR to liquidate your assets.

When I used to have a long commute to work, I’d set the cruise to 68 mph and drive really economically. What’s the point in rushing and wasting fuel to get to work? Idiots would be blasting past me at 80 mph, they sure must love their jobs, I always thought.
On the way home though, I’d be pressing on.

My Tuscan S was practically tee-total compared to my twin tank series 3 Daimler Double Six. I regularly used to get about 8mpg in that, 9 ish if i was careful with my right foot.

I drove from York to Nottingham starting just above my red line on the fuel gauge, showing 110 miles range, and the drive is about 90 miles.
Drove bang on 70 and checked my range at Sheffield which is around halfway, and it was as showing 100 miles, mpg at 65. Reached Nottingham with 80 miles showing, though my fuel light made an appearance as I reached my grans house.
Impressed my 90 drive took 30 miles off my range. It was hot so had my A/c blowing and cruise on. I’m thinking of trading my diesel Astra in for a hybrid Corolla, which should be even better.
However I got bored driving home and put my foot down a little, it went down to 50mpg going home. But I had a full tank so wasn’t worried.

I tend to think of it as driving for range rather than economy - if I'm doing a long drive not having to stop somewhere on the way for petrol saves time, and, given you often end up at an expensive motorway or A-road site if you're somewhere you don't know, money. If I'm fairly sensible - Eco mode, use cruise, only the absolutely necessary wrath of god moments - I've had 430 miles out of a tank on the Merc. Driving normally it calculates something like 360.

That’s more like it. Watch as each minute drops off the original ETA. Then you hit unexpected traffic and hope the time you made up earlier in the journey was enough. Or after the traffic you have to make up the time lost. It is after all an olympic sport

When I had a long commute I’d set my cruise to a nice economical 80mph. No point in rushing. On the way home though, I’d be pressing on.

However I also have a 3.9 V8 from my old disco and it's becoming very difficult to not put the two together
I’ve had cruise control on a number of cars and from an mpg perspective it is always less fuel efficient than your right foot

My SLK55 is doing it’s best to imitate a TVR - it’s actually bloody good on a steady run at around 30mpg but the noise when you press on a bit is addictive and I’m not getting more than 22 average.
