Ask a former Petrol station worker anything

So given the fuel shortages thought people might like to hear about what it's like inside one of thoes places.
95 to 1999 I worked for Total across a number of their sites. Some 6 to 10pm some 24hr some in towns some in little villages. There bigger sites were the start of a fuel station being more a shop than just about selling petrol and bulbs.
It being a place open 7 days a week late an early or 24hr you get all walks of life coming in. An famous people need petrol too thoguh being in the UK Gwen Stefani never came in.

Have you got as many glasses as I have? I worked in a fuel station while at uni back in the '80's and I'm still using the glasses (thanks Shell!). I think I've probably got enough to last until I'm about 250.
A few years back I was actually complemented on the glasses and asked where I got them.

I worked in the Tesco petrol station from 2008 to 2013ish. Loved it. Left alone most the time by the managers unless something went wrong (which most the time they didn’t know how to deal with!).
Used to take £750,000 a week at the one I worked at.
Downside was it was normally middle aged women I worked with!

Total actually rarely did good offers, so I had a few Jordan F1 team key rings, and some south park car air fresheners which when you pushed cart man said "I am not far I am big boned". But nah we rarely got thr good stuffA few years back I was actually complemented on the glasses and asked where I got them.

Your experience is kind of what prompted me. In summer I would work up to 100hrs a week to rack up the overtime and pay for going on the piss at uni.Used to take £750,000 a week at the one I worked at.

Best things were , free (read stolen) food, free magazines (stolen), free paracetamol, ibuprofen, pro plus, condoms (stolen) for back at uni.
Customers most say 90% you don't remember but the 10% stood out for many reasons, Friday Sat 8pm till 10pm the going out crowd, girls an guys all happy an dressed up to the 9s. The 2am people after clubs etc all shut....they were just fuxking weird and some clearly just wanted a chat at 3am middle of winter.
Cab drivers loved prom bought loads of it an always up for banter used to let them come into the shop when we were just using the hatch, they would make a coffee from the machine go for a pee an buy a shed load of jazz mags.
Bus drivers.....what is it with you guys end of shift the most miserable pricks I have ever met.
Middle of the day regular nutters, one chap tourets used to come in call every women a b
h an twitch. Women with mental health always saying she was going to poison me, a chap that smelt of piss, we used to lock the doors remotely to not let him in.SWF with the little fiesta or clio, brand new, never had any money always claiming left purse at home and needed to fill in a form. I would let you do it because it's not my money but ladies cut back on the spending.
Stolen credit card crew, yes boys buying all thr fags we have for sale at premium was kind of obvious but thanks for always throwing 20 Marlboro lights my way.
Young kids.....god your annoying but hey I snapped the sticks on all the magnum ice creams you bought when I scanned them.
The list goes on
How many people filled up by stretching the fuel pipe to the other side of the car? Some c**t wouldn’t let me do that the other day as he said it was ‘against health and safety’
I almost shouted at him , but then had to attend the the motorcyclist I have accidentally clotheslined when I stretched another nozzle across the forecourt to get 98 Ron

were the premium /super tanks always filled with what they claim...or sometimes regular petrol
did you sell jazz mags?
.did you sell jazz mags?
The tankers are partitioned as I recall so have multiple fuel types, so yeah super in the super tank but we sold so little off it. I do recall it seemed to make a bit of a difference in almost any car but could be placebo effect.
An yeah the pumps are very accurate and dispensed the amount shown infact on year ours were ever so slightly over but never under.
Jazz mags lol, for 4 years I read every copy of club international and mayfair, my collegue loved fiesta his argument being he could shag the sort of girls in that. Porn was sent weather you asked for it or not when we got a new manager they would often not be on top of magazines so we could end up with some dodgy titles like 40+ and contact mags which all got sent back.
The book you ordered mags from listed everything from Horse an Hound to Claws a sort of S an M mag. I used to read sky, FHM, maxim every month and steal a copy of Q magazine for the CDs. Also got me into cars, so 993 turbo F355, Ruf CTR2, McLaren F1, Aston V600 were all stuff I used to read about during the down period, 1.30pm to 3pm and monday to thursday after 8pm

Footballers as the sitea were in a town called St Albans so often those guys would pop in. Cast of Eastenders (women who.played pat). Stanley Kubrick driver came in the man himself stayed in the car always. Not a football fan but my colleague used to pinch the signed receipt for the autographs (we never did card cloning but I knew a garage that did never ever go there).

Loads of people, the only rule was you had to fill up a car, bike or can (not a bucket like one guy did try to) and you had to be 16. While your supposed to turn engine off We would not care, same with mobiles thoguh not as common in the 90s. However if you are smoking we turn off the whole system for everyone right away. Had a guy tell me he would put me threw the window if I told him what to do (asked him to stop smoking) I turned off the pumps and remote locked the door if it catches fire I am behind 2 inch thick reinforced glass (we used to kick the football at it at night to watch it flex) an he gets to go up like a roman candle.I almost shouted at him , but then had to attend the the motorcyclist I have accidentally clotheslined when I stretched another nozzle across the forecourt to get 98 Ron
Oh an bikers, leave your helmet on if you like I could care less.
