Bentley revives classic Mulliner colours

Ever wondered what a new Bentley might look like in a vintage colour? Now's your chance

It's now 70 years since Bentley first opened a design department at Crewe, following the manufacturer's move from Derby. To celebrate the anniversary, Mulliner is resurrecting 15 classic colours for the contemporary colour palette. All are "applied by hand spraying expertise, complemented by the latest robotic technology delivering the best possible finish on each vehicle."

Four of the colours available actually date back to the 1930s; they are Dove Grey, Claret, Oxford Blue and Old English White. The grey is one of Bentley's longest standing colours, and Claret was first used for the Queen's Golden Jubilee Bentley. The additional paints are all Crewe-era, available through the Personal Commissioning Guide.

They include the Sage Green seen here on a Flying Spur, which is joining the Bentley press fleet. It's a V8 in Blackline spec, with Cumbrian Green and Portland upholstery as well as carbon fibre trim. And if all that isn't enough customisation, the Mulliner personal commissioning service is on offer to create entirely new colours. Bentley says customers "can easily curate their own heritage-inspired colour."

With luxury cars so often specced in sombre colours, it's nice to be reminded that a wider Bentley palette exists for customers to think about. And then go for black anyway. But that's not always the case: see this orange Continental GT V8 S (or this yellow convertible), the aubergine Flying Spur or the Bentayga the colour of Dairy Milk - seemingly purple has been popular. So those that can't stretch to a heritage-coloured Bentley can rest easy in the knowledge that funky colours are out there - you just need to know where to look...

It’s Heritage colours old boy, so Bentley can bend you over that bit further and charge for the lube as well.

This is sheer pornography.

Surely for the official photographs the could have the B's on the wheels the right way up?

I'd have the wheels lining up symmetrical as well.

Better but still screaming "LOOK AT ME I'M IN A BENTLEY" rather than whispering past you unremarked unless you are in the know.

But that's modern car design for you.
