Peugeot 406 V6 GTX | Spotted

Little more than Shed money and too good to ignore, this one-owner 406 must be saved

Though never the height of automotive fashion, the humble mainstream family estate does seem to be struggling. Buyers want upmarket badges, and they want them affixed to SUVs or oversized hatchbacks - not boxy old wagons. Things are clearly bad when even the Ford Mondeo has met its maker. But a few soldier on; one of them is the Peugeot 508. It has more premium aspirations now than ever before, though it remains a conventional (if handsome) estate derived from a regular saloon. There's even a Peugeot Sport Engineered flagship now, which promises to be a rare sight, but is undeniably intriguing.

That will be the 508 talked about in 20 years' time, much as this 2001 406 GTX is worth discussing now. Because even the most ardent fans won't be too bothered about the humdrum petrols and diesels; a range-topping 3.0-litre V6, however, is a rather different matter. Like the PSE nowadays, a V6 406 probably didn't need to exist, but it was a welcome addition to those who liked a bit of extra performance. Both old-school 3.0-litre and new-school 1.6 hybrid promise to be rare, because those after the Peugeot will likely make do with a lesser variant and those wanting dynamism will probably think German, which only serves to make them more interesting. It's hard to recall when you last saw a 406, leave alone a V6 estate 406. A manual one, too...

Of course the model was almost preordained to fall by the wayside. It wasn't on sale for yonks, to start with. And by the time the scrappage schemes hit, the timing couldn't have been worse: old enough to not be worth much, not quite classic enough to be worth saving like 405s might have been. Let's be honest, too, it's hardly like this was a 205 or 306 GTI - it is unlikely that quite so many hearts will have bled for the demise of the 406.

Still, a V6 GTX was never what would be called common, combining the big engine with a trim level below the top Executive - see the cloth seats for proof. Even at their peak in the early 2000s, just over 100 GTXs in both bodystyles were registered in the UK; a French car with a large engine has typically always been a tough sell here. Now it's believed just six (!) remain taxed, with a few more SORN'd. Again, it's hardly like we're down to the last half a dozen 106 Rallyes, but it would be a shame for the old load lugger not to enjoy a few more years.

Bless it, the Pug needs some love, too. It may have been with one owner its entire life, but the recent MOTs have thrown up more than a few defects. That said there's nothing that doesn't seem insurmountable, and effort has certainly been expended on saving less worthy cars than this. Just don't forget to budget for a new gearknob. And a thorough clean of that passenger seat...

Obviously its seen a few miles so the requirement for some additional TLC is not unexpected; the real question is whether or not the idea of a big engine in an unassuming car still appeals. Because there's not much more unassuming than a Peugeot 406, especially one that won't be all that fast in a modern context. But for exactly £1,978 the old V6 looks a more than acceptable way to carry five people and lots of stuff. And in an age that tends violently towards downsizing - to the point of eliminating the engine altogether - we can think of worse ways to blow your post office savings account.

Would have made a wonderful Shed, one of the best.

Large comfortable estate motoring with stunning ride for less than a wheel upgrade on a new Range Rover, sorely tempted just for that reason

Where has Lion King gone? I’d love to hear his thoughts on this.

Suspension sitting far too high at the front.
Non-standard alloys which is strange for a 1 owner car that supposedly has good provenance.

Maybe I am picky but both of these points put me off.

£2k? I don't see it myself. A V6 doesn't mean a diamond in the rough and this certainly look rough. Even at £500 I'd look elsewhere.

Honestly who buys this rubbish?

I see the appeal, looks non descript and so won't attract attention, likely very comfortable, interesting engine, cheap to buy so no feeling precious about it and it likely drives nicely (if mechanically sound).

What else would you buy for £2k?

Probably a nicer, lower mileage four cylinder 406, if I just wanted a low-key retro car to keep for a few years.

Or a 406 coupe if I really wanted the V6.

If I wanted a V6 engine in a 406 I would look for a coupe.

Still a good looking car

I can see the appeal.
Just a little expensive IMO.
Bet its really comfy, and the engine will be a joy to use.
Super practical barge.

Your first point is valid: anyone looking for a cheap estate is likely to put their money into a 4 cylinder version (petrol or diesel - don't forget Peugeot led the way with diesels back in the day). The V6 was pointless when new because it wasn't German and couldn't hope to compete, despite probably being a better drive than most of its competitors.

The 406 in general was a lovely thing, probably better than most people would believe, but I wouldn't buy this one. The screen displaying "ASR & ESP system defective" seems like an odd picture to feature in a for sale ad.

Your second point feels a bit insulting to anyone needing a car and with less disposable income to pay for it than you have.

I'd suggest that if you were motoring on a budget then a V6 wouldn't really be the most frugal choice, regardless of how comfortable the seats may be. Secondly, one owner it may be but I suspect there will be bills just around the corner. As a supposed budget buy it is a rubbish choice for those with limited funds.

A Mondeo. Maybe manage a Mk3 but certainly manage a Mk2 V6 for £2k (pre-covid you would have easily of course).

Like this Mk2 2.5 V6 Ghia X Estate for £1500.

Ok so the exhaust is a bit Barry but this would tick all the same boxes only be better (and there's £500 saving to replace the exhaust.)

Crazy price. £2K gives you a whole load of options. Plenty of V70's around that are at least 5 years newer for this price for instance.

Unless you have a particular softspot for this model I can't see anyone spending £2K on it for it to be used as am everyday car.

As someone who despairs of new car design and all the SUVs running around I don't care if it's "rubbish" and really hope someone buys it. Even something as mundane as this makes me smile when i see it these days.

As others have said - the front suspension looks too high.

The info screen also states "ESP defective" (or words to that effect).

£2k is too much for that car IMHO, as nice as it looks.

Yes £2k is a crazy price, but lets be honest it won't be the sale price so lets not get bogged down with that.
I bet its had the diesel engine front springs fitted.

It's also got an ESP/traction control defective warning on the heavily pixilated screen in the centre console. Merde

My dad had one of these as a company car in green when we were kids, it had these flip down bench in the boot that my brother and I would sit in and stair out the back of when on holiday in France.

Regarding the car itself, it’s the only one of his cars I have absolutely no memory of the dash or interior or in fancy anything of. So it must have been a really unmemorable car...
