Just purchased a new car first one of significant value and I've heard of a few horror stories about them going walkies.

Currently I'm trying to decide which security device is best. I keep seeing the ghost and pandora immobiliser being mentioned.

Has anyone got experiences good or bad on either or is there another I've overlooked?

Thanks ste

Disabling keyless entry is probably a good starting point if that's one of the most common ways they go walkies.

Depends I what it is; if it’s a Range Rover, Golf R or Audi then I’d probably be rightfully wanting to add extra, but if it was, say, a Mustang then I’d not be so worried.

Car is a a45 AMG. Saved up hard for last few years to be in a position to afford one so trying to minimise risk as much as I can.

There is a plethora of options you can do. Keyless start pouches, big steering lock on from a reputable manufacturer, lock your driveway gates at night if you have them, block the car in if it's convenient, a good alarm system such as Clifford will go a long way, tracker that's been professionally installed and well hidden, security lighting and CCTV. I'm sure there are a hundred more options you could pick from, too. It all depends how you weigh up security vs ease of use. You could install 4 ground anchors and chain each wheel down. It'd certainly be effective at keeping thieves away but it's hardly convenient to go around unchaining that each morning if you're going to work.

Remember: If they want it, they're going to take it. All you can do is make your car look less appealing to steal than another one. If it's too much effort to break through gates, break into your house, steal the keys, undo the crook lock and get away then they'll likely look for another one and come back if/when the supply dries up.

Some alarms now offer a few minute's worth of driving when the alarm is triggered. Ample time for a thief to get away from your house then the car would stop. Less chance of them coming back for the keys or disarming instructions and hopefully somewhere inconvenient where the local constabulary would notice.

Depends on the age of the A class, but when you park up at home, double click the remote to turn off the proximity comfort remote opening option. Check the manual for the details. That prevents the relay attack against it.

And keep the keys away from the car and consider getting one of those faraday cases for the spare. Also maybe consider where you want to keep the key you are using too.

And as mentioned before - some sort of physical lock is good. You probably won’t stop a determined gang, but if you can make it just that little more difficult, they will likely move on to an easier one.

Yeah Faraday pouch will be purchased as will a good quality steering lock.

Thanks for all suggestions to minimise risk

Has anyone got any first hand experiences with ghost or the pandora immobiliser systems?

Just be careful with the Faraday pouch if it is attached to the keys. My brother-in-law came around so I could help him install roofbars and a roofbox. He left the keys in car with the pouch covering the keys and somehow he locked the car with the keys inside. We could see the keys and rocked the car until the pouch slid off a little and the car would open.

Which area of the country do you live? I'd stop the easy stuff (relay, etc), but beyond that, I wouldn't want them confronting me for it!

Not sure if it is possible on a newish car, but an agreed value insurance policy for peace of mind, just in case the worst happens.

I had never even considered that possibility (also have a keyless car and use a Faraday pouch).

Exactly the sort of daft situation I could see myself ending up in as well smile

I've just got a car of significant value to me secured by a device called "Meta Trak S5 with deadlock".

I was advised against the pandora and Ghost systems as thieves have supposedly worked out a way to bypass them.

The device I've gone for is a S5 tracker, aswell as an immobiliser. The car can be disabled via your app, so even if somebody steals your keys & fob (or even clones them) the car will not start.

I've also got a full steering lock as a visual deterrent.

did the sellers of this system mention the thieves use a £20 GPS jammer so trackers don't work?

They did....That's why the additional immobiliser controlled by the app works a treat. They won't be able to steal it unless they load it onto a truck.

Alternatively, get RTI GAP cover which will top up any payout...

Mustangs arent immune from theft, maybe not as much of a risk as the usual suspects but have seen quite a few mentions of them getting pinched.

I spent £230 on getting a Viper 106v fitted to my ST, thought the days of extra immobilisers with a little key were over but apparently not. Have stopped bothering with the steering wheel lock most of the time as it looks like it would take a while to bypass it and involve removing trim, took an hour to fit by someone who does them every day so might take a while.

Not sure the A45 is a massive risk but then you might not hear as they are comparatively rare compared to a Golf R, anything fast and German near a big city is risky.

Birmingham seems to be the epicentre of Uk car crime, every little unit under the arches and on trading estates should get a little visit, pound to a penny a good percentage are chop shops.

I'll definitely look into that option.

Is the additional app controlled immobiliser part of the tracker?
