Hi,

Looking for some help and advise please..

My wife has a Fiat 500C, It's a 2018, we have owned from new and it is in fantastic condition, only 13k and full history by main dealer. On Saturday night the rear window was smashed in an act of vandalism. Police involved etc.

My problem is i understand from Fiat i have to buy to whole roof ( £3600 ) plus fitting.... Does anyone know if someone retro fits the glass into these hoods? If not i will have to claim on my insurance which i do not want to do also i'm told they may write the car off which seems crazy.

Thanks on advance...

I'd try a proper trimmer, although you will have the issue of finding the correct glass. I had a New Beetle cab and heard of a few people replacing roofs due to broken rear screens. Luckily there are aftermarket hoods available for those, but still not cheap.

If you're anywhere near Chester, https://hoodtech.co.uk/ would be worth an email.

Friend of ours had the back screen smashed on their Mini convertible.

Put a £75 glass claim in. Got a complete new roof.

Check the small print of your insurance documents, as at least one insure has left that little loophole open!

Yeah, on a Mini.

It's a downside of the 500C's roof design - rear window replacement isn't possible. Unfortunately, it means a new roof frown

Just read it back and yes, I understand what you mean now biggrin an insurance excess payment was made for the rear window and the roof got done too.

Unfortunately for the OP, the 500C's rear window is also unable to be replaced without doing the whole roof.

Alot of insurers do EXCLUDE rear windows under the glass section of the comprehensive policies for this reason - cost of a new conv roof!!

Happened to me. Cooper convertible. I retracted the roof one day and there was a massive bang and the rear window exploded. Rang the insurance company and they agreed that the rear window was covered under the insurance. Offered me Kwik Fit or BMW/Mini to get it sorted. I took it into BMW/Mini and they replaced the entire roof as the glass is bonded and cannot be replaced separately.

The kicker was that when I went out with the Mini technician to have a look at the damage and try and determine the cause we lifted the roof from the rear (it opens from the back as well as the front to allow loading of large suitcases) and there was a BMW inspection lamp trapped in the retractor mechanism from when they had it in to tweak the mechanism...

Hi,
I was wondering if you managed to find a solution for this. I have a 595c Abarth, with the same problem.

They don't exclude the rear window from the policy, just from the windscreen section of the policy. So you can claim if you have comp, but you pay the full excess, not the windscreen excess, and your ncb is effected.

Hi,

I'm afraid not, new roof only option, still not done, it finally arrived in the country yesterday and is due to be fitted on Tuesday.

Correct,i have the excess to pay and it goes down as a claim so will affect NCD, although protected you still have to declare. I have another 2 cars on the policy, a new Defender and a GT4 so may have to split them up now when it comes to renewal.

Hi - this happened to me before xmas (someone broke in through the back window of my Fiat 500 convertible). Insurance writing it off. Wondering if it's worth me keeping the car (getting the value minus salvage value) and trying to fix it myself. Did you find a solution? Everyone I call won't touch it. Thanks.

What about replacing the rear window with a clear flexible plastic and having it stitched in place by someone?

I have called up hundreds of garages to see if anyone would do anything like this and no one does. They say it's impossible.
