Homespun Speeding Deterrents

[Whats on Second]

A variation on the cardboard cop with a speed gun, of which we have a number in nearby villages.
While it serves a safety purpose, it's verging on being an eyesore in a rural hamlet.

I believe some places have pretend static speed cameras.

what about those cardboard cutouts of kids standing by the kerb, always thought they were quite effective near schools etc.

That's not fooling anyone! It also won't appear on the likes of Waze so it's basically a waste of time.

There’s a birdbox in someone’s garden on the A303 painted bright yellow. Makes me look at the speedo every time I see it instead of the road which is probably not the intention.

Unpopular opinion on here but i don't get why there aren't more speed cameras on 30mph roads.

The amount of times I'll see people flying through them between NSL roads is ridiculous. The only time I ever get overtaken on roads is when I dare to only do 32mph in a 30.

I’d support that. 30 zones are usually 30 for a good reason, it may seem slow in a car if you’d rather be going faster, but for pedestrians and people who live along these routes, the difference between a vehicle doing 30 and 40 is quite something, if not just for the noise of the tyre roar.

People like to moan about 20 zones in town centres but personally, from the POV as a pedestrian, I much prefer traffic doing 20. It’s a damn sight quieter and less dangerous for the pedestrians trying to cross a road. From a driver POV, there are usually so many hazards in a 20 zone that actually, 20 really is plenty. Save the hooning for the open roads away from urban areas.

I've no objection to speed cameras, and deterrents to show people down. But there are assessments undertaken about the right place to put cameras.

This just looks like a busy body nimby.

Potentially it could be more dangerous than drivers speeding by creating a distraction.

It should be removed

It serves no purpose whatsoever, apart from possibly distracting poor drivers

that looks nothing like an eyesore or the result of a busy body nimby. it looks a damn sight better than the car that ended up upside down in my residential street a few weeks ago. Its a 30 limit.Be careful what you wish for.

Agreed, should be Draconian punishment for speeding in a built-up area and relax those on a roads and motorways

A chap in Beeston (small settlement on the A1) built something out of waste pipe and painted it yellow as he was annoyed at people speeding through. If you visit Beeston you can understand why he's annoyed; the A1 runs a pavement width from people's front doors and it's bad enough at the 50mph limit.

I think it is dumb when people buy a house where there is loads of traffic then whinge, especially when the Great North Road has been fast and busy since long before anyone alive today bought a house there. But TBH a lot of these places should have been bypassed back in the 50s and 60s before the traffic reached modern levels and back when it wouldn't cost HS2 sums to do compulsory purchasing of land. Slowing traffic down seems to be the cheaper way of a minor improvement for quality of life for locals whilst having a minor impact on journey times of through traffic.

Anyway, the yellow pipes in Beeston attracted the attention of the authorities and they made him take it down.

But it's far too sensible to happen.
