New GMA T.50 turns up on McLaren F1 30th tour

What a way to make your continental public road debut...

If you’re anything like us, you’ve been following the progress of the new GMA T.50 with intense interest. This decade is almost certain to produce a slew of supercars - so many, in fact, that it’ll be easy to shrug off many as also-rans. But the three-seat, V12-powered T.50 is not that. For one thing, it is the work of an unarguable genius in the shape of Gordon Murray. For another, it’s the opening salvo of a new Surrey-based British carmaker - one that we’re expecting many more great things from before too long.

Finally there are the constituent parts of what Murray himself has described as the ‘end point’ of the analogue, combustion-powered supercar. It will be super-lightweight, comparatively small in scale, seat its driver in the middle and be fired up the road by a high-revving, manually-geared twelve-cylinder engine. So while it is absolutely not a follow-up to the McLaren F1, there is a fundamental spiritual connection between the 30-year-old ghost of supercar past and Murray’s dramatic, active-aero vision for the near future.

Hence the appearance of both the GMA T.50, and its designer, at last week’s McLaren F1 30th anniversary tour. Because what better backdrop for the car than 13 glossy examples of Murray’s former masterwork - fully six of them in road-going GTR format? We’re told the guv’nor only dropped in for a fleeting visit to the Grand Hotel a Villa Feltrinelli on the shores of Lake Garda, but the pre-production T.50 attended the White Label Events organised tour for a full day - evidently its first proper run on public roads beyond the occasional developmental squirt in the UK.

And doesn’t it look the part away from studio lights or the cloudy skies of a British proving ground? Obviously there’s plenty of work still to do before the T.50 makes it to the manufacturing phase, but our man on the ground said the Cosworth-built V12 already makes itself heard from miles away in an Italian valley - and when that valley includes the competing crescendo of 13 BMW M S70/2 engines, you know it’s going to be special. The tour was supported by McLaren Petersfield, which supplied a 720S as support car (because you need to keep up, right?). Nice to have the world’s preeminent F1 menders on hand. Nice for them to get a look at what comes next in the Murray genealogy; 13 confirmed super fans probably didn’t mind either…

Should have just done a restomod on the original F1. I mean sure the T.50 is lovely and all that but the orignal one looks nicer… not that my thoughts on the matter are of any consequence!

GM is an engineer; the F1 might look prettier, but the T.50 will be better in every way. I mean, the fan - not just the fact that air gets sucked from under the car, but that when it's thrown out the back it makes the car "appear" longer aerodynamically. That is just cool, and adding it to an F1 is just wrong.

If I have one complaint about the T.50, it's the addition of something which shouldn't be there (which seems counter to GM's philosophy). It serves no function and needs to be deleted. For heaven's sake, get rid of the full stop - do we really need to write T.50? Are we supposed to call it the "tee dot fifty"? Does the American version sat "tee period 50"? Couldn't it just be called T50?

Count it as weight saving if you must - good couple of grams in the dot on the back grille...

How many F1 owners have ordered a T.50 I wonder?

I admire the engineering but the more I see pictures of this thing, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. That rear end in particular (fan laugh) is just hideous and almost comical.

Seeing them next to each other, you can definitely tell they were penned by the same designer. Well done to the team that managed to get a bakers’ dozen F1s all in the same place, that must have taken some effort.

The lucky 100 owners are going to have a lot of fun with the T.50, let’s hope we actually get to see them driven and not simply holed up in large collections.

Agreed. Aesthetics are as important as function in design that anus poking out of its bumper is not pretty. Rest of it.....Great. but that carbuncle reminds me of a ducted fan engine on a RC plane.

Wow. What an event. F1 - love those. Presumably there were no ‘skint’ attendees there?! They say money don’t buy happiness - but in this example?! I am off to get another paper round - maybe next time…!! That picture from above with them all parked in a u shape… nirvana… :-))

I do like it, what a machine, but that dustbin on the back looks horrific.

I’d love to see that convoy pass by. I really like the front of the T50 but think the back is terrible.

There's no doubting the T50's technical brilliance but styling wise it's just no where near as pretty as the F1 looking a little unresolved in certain areas.

Has Clarkson already reviewed this then? Because calling it the “T dot 50” sounds like the sort of vacuous inanity that would spew forth from his maw then get repeated for eternity by his equally vacuous and inane following like “cee apostrophe d” or “flappy paddle gearbox”.

If he hasn’t then kudos, you beat him to it.

Normally, I'm a fan (no pun intended) of function over form design, but that fan on the back does the car no favours stylistically.

It reminds me of the O.T.T. jet figher inspired concepts from 1950s America:

(And I think the above looks better!)

Why, thank you. I have no idea whether Clarkson has reviewed it or not, I don't follow the man.

But a silly name is a silly name. The hyphen in MP4-12C was silly, people said it was silly, it got dropped. Sorry if calling it out for that offends you.
