Lego Technic delivers new Ferrari SP3

It is Father's Day next weekend, don't forget...

Obviously, all Ferraris are special, but there really is nothing quite like Maranello’s ‘Icona’ range of supercars, the V12-powered masterpieces reserved for the most cherished customers. So far (there’ll surely be more to come), there have been the SP1 and SP2 Monzas, then the SP3 Daytona that was shown to the world last year. Naturally, they’re all sold out, but Lego knows a good thing, and has launched a new Technic kit based on the Daytona.

Now, as a Lego Technic model, this Ferrari isn’t one to let the kids muck about with too much. It’s intended for those 18 and above and comes with 3778 pieces, so won’t be the work of one rainy afternoon. But there are some seriously cool bits to it: a successfully assembled Technic SP3 will have moving pistons in its V12, a functioning seven-speed gearbox, butterfly doors and the removable roof. Furthermore, while Lego will always create a more etch-a-sketch look than the real thing, the Ferrari logos and faithfully recreated wheels will mean there’s no mistaking this Daytona for anything else.

When complete, the Ferrari will be 59cm long, 25cm wide and 14cm high, making it one of the largest Technic models yet, and just the thing to show off on the mantelpiece when friends come over. Lego reckons it’s the ‘ultimate sensory experience’, after all, so it’d be rude not to share it. The Technic Daytona SP3 is available now from Lego or all good toy shops, priced from £349.99. And you don’t even have to be one of Lego’s best customers to get one.

I am partially through the build on this. Small correction - whilst the real Daytona SP3 has a 7 speed gearbox (and the datatile confirms this) the model has an 8 speed. There are also a couple of errors in the instructions which would give you the odd effect of going from 7th to 3rd (or something similar) but that's a quick alignment fix.

Curvy supercars don't translate well to lego. The bulldozer is much better. https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/app-controlled-...

Looks awful, like it's been rolled a few times at high speed.

Absolutely horrendous. Another obscure model (like the Sian) that looks nothing like its source material.

Makes the GT3 RS look positively cohesive.

I've just taken another detailed look and yep, it looks even worse than a few moments ago. The only area they have got right are the wheels and tyres, the rest is just a mess of Lego bits.

You’re all missing the point, you’re not supposed to build it rofl

You stash it away with all the others basking in the warm glow you didn’t get on Xmas morning 40 years ago, then a couple of years later sell for profit once it’s been retired.

Is this the "Father Ted" edition, after he's used his panel-beating skills?

Is it just me... I really don't get the appeal of these Lego cars. It looks like an awful replica of the real thing that doesn't do it justice. And that's coming from someone who loved to play with Lego as a kid.

I'd far rather own a Burago (other makes available) version of the car which shows off the real beauty of the car's lines.

I'd agree. My 6 yr old wouldn't. He's going through this phase of collecting as many as he can. The only one that looks remotely interesting is his Merc F1 car he has. All the rest ( Fez - not the above, GTR, Aston etc ) look crap. But, it's Lego. Some kids love it. If he sticks with it over the years, I'd pay for it. Annoyingly. (£350 !!! I thought some of the Star Wars stuff was bad!!!)
