Jaguar XJR 575 | Spotted

Gloriously inappropriate at £2 a litre. But still glorious

The Jaguar XJR has a long history, much of it rich. From the very first XJ40-based (and TWR-developed) model of 1988, the flagship versions have delivered the quintessential big fast Jag experience: opulent, powerful, a cut above the German-dominated super-saloon pack. None were perfect, sure, and some were undoubtedly better than others, but anyone with an XJR on the CV is likely to remember it fondly. Assuming they didn’t have to deal with too much depreciation. Or mechanical maladies.

But this isn’t a buying guide. And snapping up cheap, fast cars that were once expensive fast cars is seldom stress-free. Instead we’re here to draw attention to the last XJR, the very rare and very powerful 575. Back at launch in 2017 it wasn’t clear that this would be the end of the XJR line, though the 575 did have all the hallmarks of a run-out special: a little more power from the supercharged 5.0 V8, a lick of snazzy paint and an appropriately burly price tag of £93,710.

Still, everyone loved it. Because the standard, 550hp X351 XJR was already superb, and the 575 was more of the same. It looked beautiful (especially in the blue), drove superbly and had an aura that elevated it above Audi S8s and the like. By the time of the 575 the interior that had seemed so contemporary in 2009 was looking behind the times, but really nothing showed off how great an XJR could be like the 575. We knew this era of XJ would be missed even when its immediate future appeared to be electric; with the big Jaguar saloon consigned to the history books, it’s hard not to look back even more fondly.

Moreover, as the most potent four-door Jaguar after the Project 8, with as much horsepower as a new F-Type R and 25 more than an XJ220, the final XJR will always have a special place in Jaguar history. It’s exclusivity is not surprising given the asking price and the fact it was - to be honest - not a million miles away from the regular XJR that had been for sale a while by 2017. Those after a supercharged V8 Jag saloon could have a lightly used standard model for much less; those after the pinnacle of uber saloon in 2017 would probably be better served by a rival.

But to hell with objectivity - let’s be thankful somebody did take the plunge in 2017. Because it looks brilliant. Better than ever, in fact, at little more than half its used price. First registered five years ago, this Satin Corris Grey car (the subtler of the two SVO paint options, with Velocity Blue also offered) has covered 33,000 miles with three owners. It’s being sold with a full Jaguar service history and, bar some inevitable wear on the quilted leather, looks factory fresh. The X351 XJ was, to these eyes, a masterpiece of four-door design, helped in this case by some great photos.

The 575 is for sale at £49,950, one of just two in the PH classifieds (against seven 550hp cars). Those earlier examples are, as we’ve suggested, a little cheaper, even those with fewer miles. With a sensible hat on, they’re the XJRs to buy. But nobody, really, bought any XJR to be sensible - they weren’t made that way. Which always made them very easy to love, and none more so than the most powerful one.

Absolutely adore this in every way, sure it'll be a pain in the arse for one reason or 10 but what a brutish beauty, this is the kind of car we'll all remember fondly when we're zipping around in our food blenders.

I do like the car.
But….
Matt paint, black wheels, quilted leather and the ‘575’ in red. It needs none of those things.
Must be JLR’s Chav option pack.

Whenever I see these(the standard V8 supercharged model) it always reminds me of how easily it overtook me in the F13 640d. I was going some at the time and it just breezed past me like I wasn't even there! I just remember thinking how quick it was for something so big and heavy.

They're actually lighter than an XFR.. for a big brute they're surprisingly light on their feet. Few hundred kilos lighter than the nearest merc atleast

I still lust after these and it saddens me that I'll probably never own one now, even the vanilla XJR is sorely tempting but I can't justify it as a toy or a daily.

This - I had the 550 version and they are amazingly agile for such a large car. Double wishbone all round as well I think, and (of course) aluminium body. Interior is lovely too, and ICE nowhere near as bad as everyone makes out. Only negative for me is they look a bit awkward from some angles esp. rear 3/4 view, but at least the shape is not boring!!

Mine was 100% reliable too, and would happily do 30mpg on a run.

Would happily have another....

An xj is meant to be either blue, black or dark green. Maybe wine red.

But not looking like it's got a st matte wrap on it is the main point.

I'm no Jaguar fan (save for the F-Type) but I do quite like the look of that. You'd certainly never forget how many horsepower it has though, would you!

Not going to lie, I have a LOT of want for that, and that's from someone who was always a bit unsure about the shape. If it wasn't for the current ruinous fuel bills it would produce, I would be seriously tempted now that I no longer feel any desire to own out and out sports cars.

Looks pants and will swallow up many £000's in repair/ maintenance.
Always love cars described as 'factory fresh' ....apart from the inevitable road rash , corrosion and dirty underside and the obvious appearance of a used car with 30k miles being not 'factory fresh'.
A factory fresh car means new and unused....

Lovely car and I think they look great, always have, they brought a much needed, modern look to the XJ.

If you want a big barge like this though, in pretty much every reliability index I've seen, these have ranked at the top of their segment - certainly higher than the 7 series/S Class/A8/Panamera/Rapide, and on a similar level to the Lexus LS.

i've done over 150k in one and it's previous generation, the looks i still love despite the design being over 10 years old but you are entitled to your opinion you're free to list your own collection of universally agreed beautiful cars for comparison. I maintain the XJ is still better looking and more interesting than the s class, 7 series, and A8 and the various drivers i've had in those cars have always talked about it and admired them.

The running costs, you are definitely wrong about, in all those miles, they have never let me down, never needed repairing, just regular routine servicing

30mpg at motorway speed, plus the ability at any speed to go from boring comfortable to the world being flung past you at prison inducing speeds in more comfort then the long haul first class seat i'd been in prior to picking it up

There is a reason the owners love them, but hey i'm probably wrong

Less of a Jaaag as a classic British club and more of a Jag as a boutique hotel.
Looks bloody brilliant and even quitled leather seats.
The only thing, never really got on with are the rear lights pulled up and over the vertical. Ah well. Otherwise, damn nice.
