I always battle with myself over whether I should have a cheaper daily and a more expensive toy, or vice versa.

I'm currently in the more expensive daily / cheaper toy camp with a Megane 275 Cup-S and a Clio 172 Cup, although combined mileage is still only 7k a year.

So what say you – more expensive daily that might depreciate more with more miles being covered? Or are you happy living with a more expensive toy that doesn't get driven all that much?

I have two toys, one of which is a daily although I don't drive it everyday. Also the other is a race car, and it's running costs are many dollar. Wife's daily was bought new but is now 7 years old, and the daughters daily is an old Ford Ka. So the cash loading is definitely towards the toy usage.

My cars are a 996 Porsche and an E class estate. I call the 996 my weekend car but actually drive it more regularly then the Mercedes. The Mercedes is for family trips and the weekly motorway journey, the 996 is for everything else.
The 996 value seems pretty stable whereas the Mercedes is depreciating. When I bought the Mercedes it cost a fair bit more than the value of the 996, but now is worth less.

About the same value but with petrol prices the way they are I can easily burn through £100 doing very little over a weekend!

My weekend/fair weather car has around 5% of the value of my daily.

My weekend toy is worth a lot more than my daily. I do 20k a year in the daily and 3k in the toy. I often think is it daft having all that money in the garage hardly getting used. When I drive it though it’s forgotten! My daily does need upgrading though.

Arent the daily and toy meant to be different ?

I would see the Megane as doing everything the Clio does but better, unless the Clio is modified/track ready ?

No help from your poll so far! It's a three way split... biggrin

FWIW when I've done it my toy has been more expensive but that's mainly because I run cheapish cars but the toys I wanted are desirable and don't depreciate very quickly.

50:50 give or take, but you assume a 2-car garage consists of a daily and a toy. Ours is split down the his/hers or school-run/estate-hack lines.

pretty much exactly the same! daily was £6k, weekend car was £6k. though this is the most expensive weekend car i've had, normally they've been less than my daily. at one point i had an £8k daily and a £800 weekend car.

I know I know, I just couldn't help myself when a friend told me he was going to sell the Clio biggrin The Megane is definitely the better daily, but I honestly have just as much fun in the Clio on a blast.

The Megane will likely go at some point over the next year, but the Clio will be staying. That's the plan for now, anyway...

Depends on the daily, for the older one it’s 1/60 and for the newer one it’s 1/10 of the value of the toy. Daily is only used for grocery shopping and all commutes are via train, so no need for anything fancy in that regard.

Cheap run around to go the store, take dogs for walkies, fun rides to the pub. Moderately expensive, but excessive, daily and expensive weekend toy.

Original toy (911 Turbo) was much more expensive than the family workhorse (Skoda Octavia vRS) but it’s now been joined by a cheap Boxster S. I may soon sell both toys and split the money for two cheaper toys, possibly Caterham and newer Boxster. Outright speed is getting dull and pointless on our roads. The workhorse will remain until the wheels fall off.

To be fair, I looked out of the window after posting that and noted the two red Mk7 Fiestas parked on my drive biggrin

Pot, kettle, black. In my defense one is the wife's.

Daily BMW E60 Shed worth 10 times or so less than Daimler.

I resent spending money on the daily. It just clobbered me with a similar bill to fix the air suspension to the one I am looking forward to spending on a suspension refresh on the Elise, but I'm grinding my teeth over one and looking forward to the other. It's got a dent I want to fix before I sell it, and I resent paying for that, yet the Elise is also booked in for a full respray and I'm excited about that.

I don't have a daily and / or toy. I have 3 cars that I use as and when I want to. The old Land Rover is probably worth the most.

Jag XK for the daily and longer trips, MG B for summer days and shorter trips. Jag worth slightly more than the B.
