UK prices for VW ID Buzz confirmed

Thought going on holiday was expensive? Wait 'til you see what a new van costs

Big vans are big business for VW, be that for commercial use or as the staycation bus of your dreams. That fully decked out Californias can cost up to £85,000 and regular Transporters £70k is proof of that. Plenty of them about, too. So while it’s easy to think of VW in terms of Polos, Golfs and Tiguans, the commercial stuff is crucial as well - and never more so than with the introduction of the all-electric ID Buzz.

You’ll probably know plenty about the ID Buzz and ID Buzz Cargo already, so now it’s time for really important numbers: prices. In the UK the Buzz range - all initially powered by a 77kWh battery offering 204hp, 228lb ft and 258 miles - will start at £57,115 for the Life. As with cars like the ID.3 and ID.4 (with which the Buzz shares its MEB architecture), Life is the entry-level model, though here that still means wireless charging, Discover Pro nav, loads of USB ports, a heated windscreen, LED lights and the Buzz box removable storage. Those thinking it looks a lot of money might like to note the current California Beach Camper range kicks off at £60,050 with a 150hp diesel Beach Camper. Living your best VW lifestyle doesn’t come cheap.

One up from a Life is the £61,915 Style, which adds LED Matrix lights, tailgate surround lighting and ‘adaptive interior ambient lighting’, which passengers will surely love. The standard 19-inch wheels are replaced with 20s, too. The most expensive ID Buzz from launch will be the 1st Edition, which adds Discover Max navigation (with a 12-inch screen replacing the 10-inch one), comfort seats and 21-inch wheels - it costs £62,995. Don’t forget the options, either; the two-tone paint the ID Buzz has been shown in so frequently is £1,800.

Still, it does remain a cool-looking van, and time spent on the configurator will do nothing to harm its appeal to the VW faithful. Does look a tad underwheeled on the 19s, though. Orders for the ID Buzz are being taken now; those with offcuts rather than offspring to cart around might like to know that the all-electric ID Buzz Cargo goes on sale next month.

"Comfort" seats are optional? I would hope they were a standard. :-)

Trying to soften the blow by making comparison to the cost of a T6 Transporter-derived day van (Beach) and/or campers (Cali) is one thing....but surely not entirely fair or indeed applicable. This chassis of the ID Buzz is based on that of a 'hatch back', so i'm not entirely convinced that it would be particularly suitable (size or weight wise) for a full camper conversion in any case....? And to convert one to a decent standard would surely cost at least an additional £15-20k? Lets wait and see what the ID Buzz "Beach" costs shall we.....

What’s the dimensions of this? Doesn’t look big enough internally to be versatile as a T6 and is missing half the kit of a Cali if that’s what you’re comparing it to.

Just never been able to get my head around the whole camper thing. £60k (or £85k even) is a shed loads of hotel stays. Each to their own I guess.

In SWB it is not as big as a T6. I had a poke around one recently and you definitely wouldn't get bikes in the back in place of the third row of seats in the way I can in the T6 Caravelle. The LWB will be more comparable to the T6. The floor isn't completely flat either which is a shame.

Presumably the "California" version will be based on the LWB

I sure am glad that we're being pushed towards buying these electric vehicles when they're so affordable for the average Brit, especially these utilitarian 'everyman' vehicles.

Because the residuals on them (especially on VWs) are high, you’re not spending £60-85k. When you sell it after a few years you get 80% of it back. Use it every weekend and it quickly outstrips hotels for value.
I got 100% back after 18 months of living in our Cali T5 and touring Europe in it. If I'd bought a converted builder's van for half the price that wouldn't have worked.

I can’t see how they’ll fit in the kitchen and other stuff - it looks a lot narrower. It doesn’t even have 3 proper back seats.

At the moment there seems to be a big gap in family-orientated ‘lifestyle’ electric vehicles. You either need to pay silly money for style over substance, or you can get something like a Berlingo that has genuine practicality at half the price, but no range.

Dacia need to make an electric Jogger, or PSA need to start using proper batteries. Or VW need to make a proper people’s car - but those days are long gone.

Hard to gauge size, if those wheels are 30" then van could be large, but if they are 18" it is basically an enlarged e-Golf, for £60+k

If you did convert one into a proper camper I wander how much damage will be done to the range?

Yes - but also, can the suspension take the additional weight? What about trailer / rear biker carrier as most people expect on such a vehicle? What with underslung batteries, is there space for water / grey water tanks? Personally I can't this replacing a T6 ICE'd vehicle to be honest....

~10 km per 100 kg

If you start bolting on roof racks and awnings - a lot more.

That’s always been my thinking, until recently. Hotel prices, especially good ones have gone through the roof. When this bubble finally bursts and it will, I’m buying a decent camper.

The looks say 'Camper van' but in reality it's just a stylish MPV. If you look at it that way and have the cash it's quite nice.

That’s also assuming you’d want to stay in a hotel given the choice. Each to their own.
