First driving “lesson” with daughter
Discussion
Just gave my daughter her first attempt at driving. Found an empty car park…. She knows all the controls…. She start off and within 5 seconds we’ve travelled 20 feet , almost a full loop. She’s mounted a pavement and smashed into the only tree in the car park.
All happened in slow motion, I think she’s bound to straighten up, we mount the pavement , I brake with my feet from the passenger seat and as I’m reaching for the hand brake we hit the tree. Then I put the hand brake on. It was like that scene from Inbetweeners when Jay crashed the motorbike into the shop window
Anyone else has a short driving lesson with their children. After 25 years of driving that’s the first “accident” I’ve been in

Your big mistake was stopping only 20 feet away from the only tree in the car park and then letting her get in the driving seat
A good first lesson for you both, but you do have my sympathy, teaching female family members is not to be recommended in my experience.
My now ex wife stopped the car on a busy dual carriageway when I was trying to teach her, got out of the driving seat, walked round the car and told me using very choice language to take over because I had been nagging her about her driving.
That was the one and only time I tried to help her.

I hope that isn't why you got divorced,

teaching lads in a friends family involved getting out of the car in an empty car park, standing aside, in safety, then letting them drive around it nearly hitting the curb or trees to get a feel for it. Was very cringe to watch.
I feel your pain OP, it's all part of the learning curve.
Teaching my daughter to drive, luckily in an old shedscort, she managed to hit a high kerb on my mate's farm and also scrape alongside one of the outbuildings.Hitting that imaginary brake pedal numerous times realising it wasn't there, I resigned myself to the demise and destruction of the car , but it was initially to teach her clutch and brake control. Thankfully she managed to get a handle on the latter.
I eventually enrolled her into lessons, my stress levels, the farm outbuildings and the car couldn't take much more.
As the above poster said, I didn't b
k her for it, she needed all the confidence and encouragement she could get, and dare I say it, it was worthwhile.

To be fair she was, and probably still is, a very good driver.
She was having paid lessons and she kept telling me her driving instructor had told her to do what she was doing, and I was telling her to follow all my bad habits

She was a very strong willed woman

My daughter was in the drive. I asked her to press the clutch and engage 1st gear.
Did I ask her to lift off the clutch instantly? No I didn't. I didn't even have a chance to ask her to feed in the clutch. The car lurched across the front lawn with me pulling on the handbrake hard digging two grooves in the lawn until the car stalled.
I thought we were going through the fence for a moment.

Agree with the above re confidence.
After a few lessons with my father on quiet roads he suggests I should drive home, this means turning into a narrow drive with those 30s style wrought iron gates on both sides. Well, i didn't judge it too well and got the car wedged up against one side. I was beside myself but my father manages to get out of the car and unhook the gate so the car can now move again.
Once the gate has been replaced the first thing he says is we're going to drive round the block and you can try it again. I couldn't believe how nonchalant he was about it and it certainly helped my confidence.

We’ve had a laugh about it. We even laughed when it happened, it’s my shed car that’s covered in scratches and marks so I’m not worried about the damage I’m just glad the airbags didn’t go off.
We will go again tomorrow but I’ll keep my hands near the wheel this time!
I would take a chainsaw as a precaution. We will go again tomorrow but I’ll keep my hands near the wheel this time!
