Hi all,

We recently made the move to the UK having lived in Ireland (Rep.) pretty much our whole lives and stupidly didn't expect car insurance in UK to be an issue for us for 2 reasons - 1) I am a UK citizen by birthright and 2) I assumed the question would be similar to in Ireland "how long have you been a resident in Ireland/UK?"

I understand that recent residents must hold a different risk profile due to unfamiliarity of driving conditions/local laws etc but Ireland/UK driving laws are nearly identical so it seems completely nonsensical that I'm in the same basket as someone who moves from a different environment. For clarity, my driving experience, licence, NCB etc aren't an issue for any insurers that we've tried but the loading due to recent residency is huge.

This is killing the dream of something v8 on the drive (£2/litre 99 is doing a good job of that too) so any good experiences/help would be gratefully appreciated. I also have a few classic cars that I'd like to import over but at the moment I'm not getting much traction from the couple of insurance companies I've tried.

Does anyone have any advice regarding insurance companies who allow Rep. Ireland residency to count? Alternatively, any specialist brokers to recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Aviva used to lump UK & ROI in together. Might still be the case, so give them a try.

Sister in law moving back from Australia has had to pay £700+ to insure a 1.2 Skoda Fabia!

Part of your problem is the lack of a solid UK credit history correlates very heavily with dodgy fraudulent claims.

Marshmallow claim to specialise in exactly your circumstances so give them a try.

Otherwise get yourself on the electoral roll and establish a bit of a credit footprint asap, should help massively come renewal time.

Please check carefully how much it might cost to bring your classics to the UK

https://www.gov.uk/moving-to-uk

You might find it cheaper to sell in Ireland and buy again in the UK.

Thanks for the replies!

Re importing, currently going through the TOR process to avoid any taxes etc, we'll see what happens.

Apologies, I didn't realise they had introduced a TOR process. I hope you are successful and can import all your cars.
