Hi all,

It seems that most car insurance companies accept a break of up to 2 years when counting NCD. Does anyone know of any companies which accept a break of up to 3 years?

Thanks

I had this issue a few years ago. Couldn’t find any which accepted it at just under 3 years break, but did find a few who would give an introductory NCD very close to what I previously had. Just need to ask if they can do this.
It was quite a few years ago when I went through this so I can’t remember which companies p, sorry.

Might be worth trying a broker

My understanding is that no claims discount isn’t a hard and fast thing and insurers have some latitude if they see you as low risk/want your business. Applying a non-standard NCD doesn’t always match up with the online application forms though, so you need to speak to a human (or use a broker to do this for you)

For example, I opted out of my company car scheme a while back but was able to get a decent NCD applied even though I hadn’t been building up years with any insurer. They basically gave me a discretionary discount but called it NCD and provided a statement/certificate that described it as NCD when I later moved to a different insurer.

I think Direct Line allow a break of 3 years, but it may only be if they were your last previous insurer? I can't find out for certain with a quick google search. frown

Some will do 3, also some will step it back after the two.

E.g. you have 5 years but a break of 3 years. Some (with a policy of accepting within 2 for this example) will take a year off for the additional years gap and give 4 as a result.

I would run a comparison with however many years you want to use and then call the cheapest couple (that you would consider insuring with) and see what they say.

If you can't find an insurer who will accept your NCD there are some who will offer a policy with an NCD that mirrors your main NCD.

That's what I did when I first got a 2nd car.
