People who buy a soft-roader from Arnold Clark...

Even when they're a good one like the Peugeot, I agree

When I see an M5 badge on a 5 series, it tells me the owner knows enough about cars to know that the M5 is the top of the range but not enough to know that car people can tell the difference. Even more obvious they are clueless when they don't remove the 520d badge.

Same with a V8 badge on a Astra.

I can't, I know too much. However, my wife (who enjoys driving) knows nothing about cars - her car purchases are based on the way it looks and mostly about what colour it is. Last one was a blue Mini - lucky it turned out to be a fine car, peppy performance and nice to drive.

Is that the one that makes a 1990s style blip blip noise when the girl with pink hair unlocks it with the remote?

So what? They are a platform for selling vehicles in a relatively painless fashion to people who probably have better things to do than salivate over 30 year old Japanese roadsters. For 90% + of the populace a car is merely a tool.

Do many people on PH even know much about cars? Of course everyone thinks they do but many of the posts would suggest not...

Besides, who really cares? I know feck all about tumble dryers and probably take the same approach to buying one as Mr/Mrs Peugeot did to buying their car.

That of course probably makes me a terrible human who should have the piss taken out of me on DryerHeads.com

And given the OP's garage on here, I think he has quite a lot in common with the Pug driver... smile

Certain members of my family would be more impressed if you turned up in a brand new Vauxhall with the latest plate rather than a 5 year old Ferrari

I don't know much about the oily stuff but if I am interested in something or if I am about to buy something, I'll educate myself up to a point. That point will depend on how interested I am or how expensive the item is. As it happens I bought a washing machine and tumble dryer recently. I did spend time on various consumer review websites as didn't want to buy a rubbish one. I found it tedious but it had to be done.

Cars are more expensive than the average white-good so I'd expect someone to make a little effort to know what they are buying.

A car of this type is probably entirely fit for purpose for a large proportion of drivers. I imagine the buying experience will also be painless. However, for those more clued up, the disappointment with this class of SUV lookalikes and ' jacked up ' Fiesta size cars is their lack of internal space, rear legroom , etc.

How do you know they didn't do that and ended up with the Pug which is perfect for their needs?

I helped my sister recently buy a new 1 Series. As a knowledgeable big balled PHer who is st hot at everything to do with cars, I did all the research (not that I learned anything I didn't already know) and cut her a deal.

A 118i from Arnold Clark was the right answer. For her. Which is the most important thing.
