I give it a wash and make sure its clean inside. At least that way it has an air of being cared for even if it has no impact on the outcome of the test.

No amount of maintenance can avoid a tricky MOT fail, especially if you don't have a ramp at home to inspect underneath and rotate all the wheels off the ground.

I do think it's worth checking the easy stuff before putting a car in for test. Lights, wash/wipers, horn, seat-belts. Also the fundamental of "does the car stop in a straight line under heavy braking?"

Tips. Clean the interior, there is nothing worse than sifting through crap checking seat belts and getting to obd ports. Gets me grumpy before I start!

Empty the boot, we need to check the boot floor etc so take your pram/golf clubs/ sex toys (yes really!) out and make our job easier please.

Check your lights and windscreen washer fluid. If these are not in order then we assume you don't care about the car.

An Mot is what it is, we work to the book but if the car is a stty heap of who cares about the tester and we get narked then discretion will tend to be towards failing rather than an advise.

We remember the cars! Politeness is free and worth a lot. Be rude, argue with us, moan we are taking to long etc and it will be noted going forwards biggrin

My local garage, who does my repairs, also does MOT's. So, after checking the basics myself, I get them to give it the once over before the MOT and give me a heads up before doing the test.

There's a guy who brings his car for mot at the same station we've used for many years.
Every year is the same. He obviously has issues as every time his car is filled with around 500kg of nuts , bolts , washers ect. It's inches deep in the footwells all over the seats , the boot is full ,even the drivers floor .
The car , a Focus is well down on the springs .
He even knows the reaction he'll get when he turns up, empty the car out or they won't test it but he still arrives with the car full!.
I've met him, he seems a really nice guy but there's things going on there...biggrin

I'm doing right then biggrin I always clean the car inside and out and check all the basics. Took the garage a tin of biscuits when I picked it up last year too.
