I've seen previous threads like this and thought 'so what, don't be nosy' - however having seen this event first hand today, and being bored sat in traffic, I am can't help being curious (and nosy)...

A34 oxford Southbound late afternoon today - getting on for 10 police liveried LR discovery's very spread out (some could have been range rovers); 2 articulated box trucks - both a single dull brown/olive-ish colour and their cabs with security-cash-van type side windows (partly blanked off and presumably not opening); then further back and spread out approx 3 police mini-buses; 2 I think prisoner transport type blue rigid box trucks (could be they are mobile office/incident room, not actually moving people). Somewhere way way back was a drab olive heavy recovery truck.

Traffic was heavy and stop-start in both directions - and therefore a 4 of the LRs created a small sterile area in front of and behind the artics. However all the other vehicles after those 6 were just mixed in with the stationary traffic and not together.

No standard RPU cars (that I could see) and no motorcycles (that I noticed).

Just curious as to what it would have been - the LRs including livery didn't look like typical oxfordshire RPU fleet to me.

From the artics, the sterile gap, and the recovery truck I was thinking nuclear - however the mini-bus etc doesn't feel essential- and sterile area followed by everyone else just spread out was unusual.

I'm out of the traffic now - but still curious.

Possibly. That was at number 5 on my thought list.

Forgot to add- there is probably never a good time to travel with a group that size, but bottom of my suggestion pile would have been a late July Friday afternoon - guarantee heavy traffic.

Nuclear convoy.

I've seen it on the M1 and it's been mentioned a few times on here.

What you have to do Philip is stand behind a piece of paper. Yup one single sheet of paper is quite enough to stop those nasty Alpha particles you seem so worried about........

He obviously hasn't seen the testing the flasks go through for carriage purposes. I work with a bloke who used to be part of the security detail for the convoys. Not many people know this but inside the cabs of the transporters there's a button. When they get to their destination, they whack the button and an anchor fires into the ground so they can't be just driven off.

Keep up at the back. These aren’t fuel casks.
