I still use them.

though, what the heck is a bennies? and shaguar isnt really a nickname, its an austin powers reference. the nickname would just be 'jaaaaaaag' oh and a mercedes is probably a 'merc' now, not a 'benz'

The first 2 I've heard of.
Not heard of Bennies, Porker is a fat person?
Fezza? Mazza? Scooby is obvious, Shaguar is a term I've never heard!

It always was and always will be used by dullards who think they’re being clever. See also Parcel Farce, Bookface, Halfrauds etc etc. people don’t think how quick witted you are, they think what a bell end you are.

Bennie = Bentley
Porker = Porsche

I've pretty sure the only place I've heard any of these used is on PH. Makes me cringe a little bit every time I read one.

They all sound thoroughly cringe-worthy to me. Although I guess Benz is no worse than Mercedes when you think about it.

I've got an early eighties CB book with a huge list of them, but half won't be PC enough to put on here! Long nose Henry for the Capri, is a good one however.

I tend to use "Parcel Farce" - not to be funny or clever; merely as a reflection on the service you can expect from them.

Then again, i am a dullard, I must admit.

Benny, or more specifically, "Benny-S Car + Boat Technik + Design Team GmbH" was a tuning house responsible for some of the worst atrocities against Mercedes W126s in the 80's ever, and they were up against some stiff competition at the time...

Mercedes is ok for Mercedes Benz and that’s about it

I’m sure people do it to think they are edgy, I always cringe when I see people on here call the Nissan Juke the Joke and the quashqui the qumquat.

Definitely cringe. Smacks of third-rate motoring journalism to me.

Has anyone, outside of car magazines, ever called a Peugeot a 'Pug', for example? Or referred to Ford as 'The Blue Oval'?
'Pugrat' I have heard from a Peugeot owner. Fords used to get called 'Dusty Bins' for some reason at a place where I worked years ago. No idea why TBH, although I don't think many people there were Ford fans.

Fords used to be built in Dagenham, hence 'Dagenham dustbin'.....

"Dagenham Dustbin" was a standard term of mild abuse for those not keen on Fords. That's probably where it came from.

I've known plenty of people (mostly those with 205, 106 or 306 GTIs) refer to Peugeots as 'Pugs'.

The whole 'Blue Oval' or 'Three-Pointed Star', 'Octagon', 'sources close to Munich' and stuff in motoring journalism is because the written word is different to speech and a lot of writers don't like repeating themselves too much. If you're writing about Fords, the word 'Ford' is going to crop up a lot. But a lot of them get themselves tied up in knots about it and really good writers structure their sentences to avoid the dreaded 'second mention'. "Henry Ford's eponymous firm" still stands as the worst example I've come across.

Many Morgan enthusiasts will insist that 'Moggy' refers to their cars, not the upstart small Morris saloon designed by the chap with the funny foreign name. Similarly you get a certain breed of Rolls-Royce owner who will recoil if you refer to the car as a 'Rolls' - "Rolls was merely the salesman, dear chap," they'll say. "Royce was the engineer - if you must shorten it, let it be a 'Royce'."

I think there's a similar 'logic' behind the people who won't countenance 'Merc' but will accept 'Benz' - Benz was the engineer and the original company, but Mercedes was just a marketing name inherited from Daimler.

It makes me chuckle when Americans refer to Land Rovers or Range Rovers simply as "Rovers"

Conjurs up images of a rapper wanting to bh slap his ho in the back of a 75.
