After just over 2 years without, I've just negotiated the purchase of a new car which I will pick up in September. Great, but the initial joy of a new car has been soured by my situation from some learning today. I previously held motor insurance which was cancelled on 08/08/2020, when I sold my last car. I wasn't using the car during lockdown and WFH so decided to offload it rather than it being a garage queen. If I needed the use of a car, I have driven as a named driver on my wife's policy.
I'm looking to open a new policy on 02/09/2022. The break in policy is 25 months and I'm now learning many companies only honour the NCD entitlement for a period of two years. On the meerkat's website, they suggest some companies do offer up to three years but give no clues to the identity of these companies. I have already asked my last insurer, Saga, for some flexibility but they just quoted me the 2 year rule.
Has anybody else had a similar experience or aware of companies who may honour my NCD entitlement after a 2 year break? I'd really appreciate any help - thanks.

I don't know of a specific company but I know many will match NCD earned as a named driver, maybe you could investigate that route? Also, try a multi-car policy with your wifes car? If not, try contacting some specialist brokers (Adrian Flux, Chris Knott, Aplan etc) and explain you situation, I'm sure they will able to help.

Thanks for that advice. I think I'll go down the named driver route first but they state I need to provide proof that I've been a named driver for the years driven on my wife's policy. Not sure what constitutes 'proof'.
If that proves too difficult, I'll explore the multi-car policy option. Thanks again.

You could ask Admiral. I had a similar thing a few years and they gave me a chunk of my original NCD on the basis that I could not protect it and any claim in the next year would get me back to zero but after the year I could protect it as normal.

Something like that anyway - it was a good few years back so they might not do it now (or my memory could be wrong! ) but worth a try?

I guess you spoke to them directly rather than just going through their website?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but if you were to purchase a 1 day policy, during that 2 year period. Would that "reset" the clock?
Effectually having another two years from the end of the 1 day cover.

A copy of the insurance policy with your name on it for those years would do it

No, it’s 2 years from the proof and the 1 day cover wouldn’t provide any NCB proof to count from.

Admiral certainly used to do things like accept it but knock a year off for every year over 2 years.

Probably worth running a comparison search with and without the proof and then if it’s worth it in your circumstances (E.g. enough saving to be worth it) speak to the cheapest few you would consider in the search with the bonus.

I've been there before having been abroad for more than two years but less than three.

My previous insurer was happy to carry on with the NCB which I had had when I cancelled the last policy, saying that they would do this for existing customers but not new ones.

It may be worth going back to your previous insurer and pushing them a bit.

I’ve got a ‘spare’ full ncd from a car i sold. The car that replaced it doesn’t need nor aquire ncd (classic). Perhaps on my daily driver policy I should cancel it every other year and start a new policy with the spare one - then it would keep the spare ‘fresh’?

My toy didnt have ncd either, but A Plan were happy to link it to the policy so stayed valid although didn't affect the premium. Then when I needed it elsewhere, they were happy to issue a ncd certificate.

May be worth exploring for you
