My car was reversed into while parked on the road leaving the front bumper with scuffs and chipped paint

I have the persons number who reversed into the car and they said they don't want to go through the insurence and told me to get a quote to repair the paintwork.

I have a quote for repair for £150 to be done at home on the drive which I'm happy to do.

Now he's saying he wants me to get a quote from a bodyshop because of a premium of having the car repaired at home!

I have problems with this because I have to find time take the car to a bodyshop and get a quote. Then if the quote is cheaper I will have to arrange getting picked up and dropped off at the garage!

I've already been inconvenienced by the car getting hit now he wants me to be further inconvenienced getting quotes and arranging transport!

Am I been unreasonable?

Add the cost of your time and taxis to & from the bodyshop to you final quote!

I'd be surprised if it's any cheaper...although a proper repair at a bodyshop will probably last longer than a smart repair at the roadside...but also be more expensive.

If you're not too late, then you could always still claim through his/your insurer...which will probably end up more expensive for all parties.

It'll be far far cheaper to have someone like 'Chipsaway' come to your house and touch up the paint than taking it to a bodyshop. I would tell him if he wants you to go to the effort of getting a quote from a bodyshop then that is the route you will be seeking for repair afterwards as well.

You’re not being unreasonable, no. Perhaps you could take your car to a main dealer who will no doubt give you a high quote, meaning the other person will be happy with your existing price.

I would say to them its the £150 or we go through insurance - their choice.

As mentioned on other threads - you will both have to inform your insurers anyway come renewal time.

If they're being difficult now then just go straight to the insurers. The person who hit you will, most likely, also be a pain to get cash out of at all and will probably try to get you to take the cheapest repair option rather than the best one.

You gave him/her a chance and they're being a dick about it so take the easy route imo.

This. If he's this difficult on Day 1, then by the time you need him to pay he will be totally uncontactable.

they should be thrilled to have the chance to get away with £150 and that your happy to have it painted in the driveway , bodyshop plus loan car will be tripple easy

tell him sounds like hassle and you will go through insurance

Why on earth would you want your car repaired on your driveway instead of in a proper bodyshop? There is absolutely no way I would go for that option. Even if I had to do some dropping off/picking up of my car, I would absolutely want it done in a bodyshop where they have a proper oven to bake it off etc.

Painting a car outside in the damp, rushing the process to get it done in a day using 'air dry' products, and with dust/dirt blowing around and sticking to the lacquer, vs in a proper bodyshop with products that have to be baked, but will last far better... No brainer.

(As one of my numerous business ventures I owned a bodyshop for years, and our prices were the same as a 'smart repairer' or a Chips Away type person)

Yes, I agree, this is a huge red flag.

I'd be going through insurance or at least insisting he pays the £150 before you have the work done.

£150 is also perfectly reasonable and I'd be thrilled if that was all it cost me after hitting someone's car.

Exactly.

If they'd coughed up an amount already and said, "Let me know if that's not enough.." then fair play. But life's too short to deal with s so fk 'em.

Indeed.

If I hit and damaged someones car and they asked me for £150, I would be over the moon and be rushing to the nearest cash machine, give them £200 and tell them to keep the change.

I reversed into an Astra and was overjoyed to get out of that by paying £280 - they should be ecstatic about being let off with £150.

If they’re messing about already, time to leave it to insurance.

You aren't being unreasonable, if you gave me that quote i'd be rushing to give you the money for the repair.

If Iwas in your shoes OP i'd have told him I want it repairing at a proper body shop and they will quote multiples of your quote just to remove the bumper, respray and refit it.

I'd go to the insurer instead.

£150? I'd have already paid you.

Expect this to be hassle.

I just had my bumper done at a proper bodyshop and it was knocking on for £300.

It's a good job, though. My neighbour had his done on the street and it looks st.

One of my car's wings has what looks like an old smart repair - the lacquer's failing and I'll have to get it re-done.

Plus I had my wheels "smart" repaired about 18 months ago and the repairs have already discoloured badly.

It's a false economy if you ask me.

only allow a driveway job if its a $500 snotter , the repairs dont last like a decent job , theres a reason bodyshops spend 1000s on spray booths and equipment

Very similar situation myself a few years back. £180 mates rates from a friend, normally he'd have been about £250. Muppet who did the damage was whining so I suggested a try a BMW main dealer and his insurance. He bank transferred the £180 within 5 minutes.

OP, you are doing them a favour.

Just ring the closest body shop and get a quote, it will be higher, then ask the body shop the cost for them to pick it and drop it off and add that on. Then send it to the person that hit your car and wait the 2 minutes before they reply accepting the £150. They are obviously too stupid to know the cost of body work and respray work. Educate them, take the money.
