Been thinking about the next motor this week. Sort of contemplating how much I can drive the current one into the ground, and how much of a jump the next one might feel as a result. A delayed gratification kind of thing.

Obviously the sort of nightmare scenario is hanging off then making a big outlay, and slowly discovering that your big new investment is only marginally better at the things you really need it to do.

I'm interested in the good news stories though! What is the biggest jump you've made, and why?

Cost disparity is probably the most boring thing here, but I'm interested in the other stories, like you sold an 8k motor, invested a further 6k and got an experience back that justified you doing it.

2years ago, upgraded from a civic coupe to an Accord type R costing six times as much. Absolutely no regrets. Recently considered changing back due to running costs, but couldn't bear to sell the accord, so am cutting back on non essential journeys.

I added £9k to go from a 330d to a C63.

I got a petrol engine, hand built V8, a proper performance car and a better interior.

If you pick wisely it’s great.

To go from a 2012 Focus to a 2020 Focus would be a waste of money. Horses for courses.

I went from a 19 year old E36 2.5 I6 (bought new) to an F30 335d x-drive, bought new 5.5 years ago. So new to me was:
Diesel
Sat Nav
i-Drive
Auto
Plus a host of other electronic stuff, I am still finding out 5.5 years in.
I usually keep my cars for 10 years plus, the E36 was stretching it at 19 years!
Game changer? In some ways - however, the 3-series is now so much wider, heavier, and longer than before.

A good shed does 99% of what a far more expensive car can do.
So that extra 1% has a lot of heavy lifting to do.

I've just done this. I bought a year old Peugeot 3008 to replace a 17 year old Honda FRV. (approx. 5k vs 35k).
The Honda still drove fine but had various issues that would cost way more than the car was worth to fix, and was terminally dull. Combined with the cost these days of buying an equivalent age/mileage cars having gone up massively, this all convinced me to try a newish car.

The Peugeot is a bit larger, much better looking, less practical, way faster, vastly more efficient, more stable/confidence-inspiring, and somewhat easier to drive. When the engine actually kicks in, it even manages to sound better.
Definitely not worth it financially, and we'll see if the massively increased complexity has any effect on whether it is still in use in ten years.

My first car was a Vauxhall Nova 1.2.

My second car was a Vauxhall Senator 2.5 Auto

Never done a bigger jump than that!

Some years back I went from a 10 year old Mini Cooper S to nearly new Jaguar XJ for the daily driver which was quite a jump!

Sorry, no good news story here though. I realised I actually preferred using my car allowance for mortgage over payments / travelling than a daily snotter. So went back to a shed 18 months later and stuck with it.

Back in 1981 I went from a rusty 1973 Rover P6B 3500S to a 1978 MK2 Granada 2.8 Ghia that was a much better car, albeit a bit lacking in performance!

In December 2019 I bought a BMW Z4M Coupe to replace a BMW 3.0Si Z4 Coupe. They may look similar but the M is worlds different, even if it did cost about twice as much.

I went from this

A Chrysler town and country in hearse spec…

To this

Cayenne GTS with a 4.8 V8. I was meant to buy a Tourag but found the Porsche at the right price.

Wife had no idea until the text “I’ve bought a Porsche”.

A few years ago I sold a 2002 silk 230 to a mate and bought a new slc43 amg , the electric seats in the new car cost more than I sold the old car for , and ironically , the old car had electric seats that still worked .

A 2003 Fiat Stilo 1.6 16v to 2002 Porsche Boxster 986 2.7

Think I got £300 for the Stilo on trade in. Missing door trims and all.

If you’re sort of replacing like for like, I really wouldn’t expect much positive change. I generally drive 20 year old Alfas, and recently had cause to drive a mates 1 Series - expensive thing, hybrid of some sort. It was horrible - numb, gutless, with a gear box that did its best to thwart progress. If I’d just dropped £37 grand on the thing, I’d be gutted.

Clearly if you’re buying something interesting, the outcomes are likely to be more positive.

In 1981 I went from a 7yr old Hillman Imp to a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus.

1998 went from a Honda Accord 2.0 to a Subaru Impreza Turbo. Paid over list price for a 6 month old one as the waiting list was around 18 months.
