I'm embarrassed to say that I forgot it was even new car reg day!
Years ago (back when things were a G-reg and an S-reg) etc it was all quite exciting.
These days with all the numbers instead of letters, for some reason not so much.
Pretty much why they made them twice a year wasn't it? Remove the anticipation / lack of sales in prior months and flatten out the depreciation curves a little as they were so dependent on reg rather than actual age.Years ago (back when things were a G-reg and an S-reg) etc it was all quite exciting.

I also remember neighbors getting a car on new reg day and thinking how rich / fancy they were

Also, the new world of easy finance everyone seems to be driving something new so often the kudos behind getting a 'new car with new reg' has totally worn off.

I rather agree. I used to be excited but nowadays although it’s every six months, it feels like it’s every six days the new registrations come out. I’ve slightly lost interest and usually have to spend a few moments working out what the current plate should be, as it changes so often. My Cooper S should’ve been a 71 plate, then a 22 plate but now it’s due next month so it’ll be on a 72 plate!

not quite. It was mostly at the insistence of the car makers, as in the UK they had to ramp up all their supply for August as that was the plate change date and when most people wanted their new cars.I also remember neighbors getting a car on new reg day and thinking how rich / fancy they were

The other elements you mention are happy coincidences
