Poor guy miss fuelled 2day old car

Spotted a car earlier tonight sitting at side of country road so stopped to check ok, guy said “waiting on RAC, got this 2 days ago (22 plate) out for run & I’ve put petrol in instead of diesel”. Poor guy I felt for him & said I’d done it myself years ago (albeit in an older moto). 5hours later it’s just been picked up on the recovery vehicle….

d, sorry to hear you bought a diesel once tooI can see how it's easy to do. Some days I jump into a diesel car, then Mrs V.'s petrol car, then I might help a friend move in a diesel van etc. You think about everyday things you need to do and could slip up at the pumps, although I've never done it yet...
When I fill with diesel I have this little routine that only takes 5 seconds:
(1) Check price of diesel on large forecourt sign and check it matches with the price of diesel on the display (the other prices disappear when you lift the nozzle)
(2) Check pump handle says diesel and visually follow the fuel line to see if it terminates at the diesel spot on the fuel pump.
(3) Check nozzle is the "snug" diesel one, rather than the wizards sleeve petrol one.
Sometimes you can confirm it's the diesel nozzle by the the fuel caked onto the handle!

Wording “many of us have done” might’ve been better. When I did it the attendant at the forecourt handed me a business card for someone who’d come & sort vehicle out, sign written van turned up & did it very efficiently for about £150. Guess there’s enough folk doing it to buy the kit & make a business out of it.
I drive multiple vehicles & was just a lapse in judgement, felt quite a bit of sympathy for this guy though, probably the 1st time he’d fuelled his new motor.

Last haulage place I worked at had no onsite refuelling so we fuelled the trucks at the local Mobile. One guy was down to fumes and brimmed his tank with unleaded by mistake. I started at 8 and he was still there late in the morning when I passed . Absolute chaos and blocking other pumps too. Few days later I happened to glance down and realised I’d started to put about £20 of unleaded in mine when filling up.Talk about a brown trouser moment! I just brimmed the rest with diesel and thankfully all was good.

Heading home & saw the orange flashing lights at the corner, went to investigate as was about 23:00 & us country folks do that if there’s something going on near our homes as chances are we’re offering assistance to someone we know. Surprised to see same vehicle had just been winched on.Thought the majority of modern cars had filler necks that prevented you from being able to do this...?
As for the 'most of us have done it' comment. I only know one person who's done it although I live very local to a company who specialise in draining the tank and fuel system for people who do this and the number of vehicles they have is insane so it must be more common than i think.

Bloke on his own, not on a M-way or 'high risk' location, would have been a long way down the recovery priority list. I suppose they might also have sent out a patrol in the meantime, although that seems pointless for a misfuel. Might be a case of the patrol needing to order/authorise the flatbed though I guess.
I've never done it, but we run a petrol & a diesel in our household, and I've had the "oh sh*t is this the right pump?!" moment just as I've started filling a few times! Particularly if using a Shell garage, with their silly bl**dy colour coding!
