I expect we have all been in that long wait in a queue of stationary cars, I was in one trying to join onto the M25 other day. Where the M25 diverts North & Southbound. Sat for over an hour moving one car length, you know the drill. Then a highways maintenance van driver comes alongside me,
on goes his indicator and proceeds to bully his way in front of my car. He had escaped the five mile queue by driving in the inside lane and now needed to get into the correct lane.
What would you do in my situation.
Politely give way and let the vehicle join the correct queue in front of me.
Make sure said queue jumper was unable to join correct queue by blocking route in.

Just let him in, life’s too short.

"Highways Maintenance" and scaffolding trucks.

The two vehicles you'll want to give more than an inch. Because, if you don't, they'll take it anyway.

Let him in - I think you will find he is correct in doing so.

Why didn’t you do the same as him, rather than being stuck in a queue for 5 miles?

As the saying goes, don't start anything you're unwilling to finish.

Now I'm a bit older I pity those in such a rush, governed by the clock. Back in the day I would have fought for the gap like my life depended on it!

As a PH contributer, you should just ram him. You might not win, but he'll think twice next time he sees you.

I would have thought a highways maintenance vehicle is entitled to 'jump' the queue onto a motorway given that they perform work on motorways. This particular van might have been on its way to a job (or not).

People do similar to this on Putney Bridge and I make sure I’m hugging the car in front so no way they can get in.

Life may be too short, but not on that damn bridge.

Why was there a five mile queue with an empty lane next to it?

I assumed he was in the empty inner lane (say going North) and then barging into the outer lane (say going South) at the split, with the latter route queuing. Or vice-versa.

Let them in. How much time are you going to save (which is the only thing that matters to you surely) by not doing so?

All of the scaffolders I use as sub contractors come from the 'fists first school of diplomacy' so I'd just let them in and save an awful lot of unnecessary agro.

Let him in, no point the stress.

I do use both lanes on a merge in turn situation to the annoyance of people queuing on a single file

My usual impotent rage says they can push into the queue anywhere they like behind me, but never directly in front of me. Isn’t that the rule for all us slightly-podgy middle-aged warriors?
