Hello
Someone recently move close to me, and her car exhaust sounds incredibly noisy, it’s a turbo, so she’s been advised to run it idling for 5 minutes before leaving and when stopping. This in itself is terrible, but the sound of the car approaching or leaving is bad enough on its own. I am in communication with the owner, and she accepts her car is very noisy, she said it was something the previous owner did. She bought a £50 muffler, but did nothing at all. I suggested taking the car to a garage to determine what has been done to make it noisier and see if it can be reversed and how much that will cost, not had a reply yet. Is there an easy way to determine the mods done by the previous owner ? If so I can get her to look. This needs resolving, as this car wakes me every morning at 7am, sounds like a rocket firing up.

Many thanks

A large potato, a broomstick and the cover of darkness is all you need

A can of expanding foam squirted up the exhaust overnight would quieten it down.

A telephone is more effective.

In the meantime, lets play 'guess the car'.

I'm going Abarth 500/595. Stupid little fart cannons.

I already thought of a can of expanded foam in the exhaust, I was getting so distraught, waking up with a headache every morning, is no fun. I contacted, local council, environment agency, local counsellor, property management company……no one actually cares, even though this clearly exceeds the noise for a car, even though modding a car to make it noisier is illegal, the police just didn’t want to know, they all refer me to each other. The owner is apologetic, and wants to find a solution, I’m just trying to help her find one. It’s beyond me why anyone would want to make their cars noisier, manufacturer’s spend a fortune, making them quieter. 😱

Easy, take it to a garage, get some proper back boxes fitted.

This is nonsense. A stock exhaust, even second hand, will just quieten down things. Doesn't matter whether the car has a turbo or not.

It’s suggested to replace with a. Stock exhaust, is that the most likely culprit ? If so how much is this likely to be,

The only solution is to get a quieter exhaust - either put the standard one back on or get a custom made one with bigger silencers (and/or extra silencers in the mid-pipe).

I am dubious on the warm-up routine, and cooling down probably isn't needed for normal town driving - maybe after a track session.

Edit to add now we know it is a Subaru - my mate had an STi5 back in the day and ran it with a big downpipe but the stock 'cat back' exhaust and that was perfect for a daily driver - a nice exhaust note but not loud.

Ask her to get a mild hybrid system fitted to it so it can pull away using electric power only and then start up when it's off the road you live on.

No car needs to idle for 5 mins before driving off , then idle for 5 minutes before turning off. Just drive off boost as much as possible for the first/ last couple of miles.

Not sure about the turning on but an old friend had a Subaru of this vintage when we were younger. That had a turbo timer fitted to it that meant the car would stay on for a few minutes after stopping.

I assume the 5 minutes before is to let oil come up to temp but she could just drive it below certain revs for the first 5 minutes you'd assume.

That’s what I told her, someone ( most likely a boyfriend ) has obviously told her that’s what she needs to do. I think she needs to take it to a garage for an assessment, if it’s just the exhaust that needs changing, need to get a approx price, for the car in the image, thanks

I never get these threads, how loud can it be?

There's no way that a Subaru makes enough noise to give you a headache in 5 minutes. Even if it was running a completely unsilenced exhaust.

Like, I get that noisy cars can be annoying but why exaggerate.
