Want to go camping and take your 911? Sorted

Surely this new Porsche Tequipment roof tent is the greatest tent in the world?

I cannot decide. Is this mind-blowing or madcap? All I know is this: I don’t much care for camping but the idea of camping in (or more accurately, on) a Porsche 911 is strangely appealing. It’s made even more appealing by this sentence in the press release: ‘This practical adventure equipment transforms the sports car into a hotel room for nature-lovers.’ Well, that’s me sold, then. I’ll have one, but how much is it you might ask? €4,980, which for an OEM accessory from Porsche is actually not bad at all. The only issue is you have to add the £90,000 cost of the mount.

It doesn’t fit only 911s, though. The roofbox for two can be fitted to a Panamaera, Taycan, Macan and Cayenne. And unlike a motorhome, you’re not pegged by a 55mph speed limit because the Porsche tent is rated up to 80mph. The tent has something in common with Porsche GT products, too. The ‘exclusive hardcase’ was developed at the Weissach Development Centre.

I think the estate agent’s brief would go something like this: ‘Camp Porsche’ is a twenty-first century, luxury, outdoors living space (luxury is a relative concept, of course, and this is definitely more luxurious than your average roof box). When extended, it opens up to create 27,300cm2 of living space, which is plenty of room for couples on a weekend getaway.

Facilities include two side windows, which let you take in the beauty of your surroundings. Both windows open for ventilation and come with an insect guard to keep out bugs. They also have blackout blinds if you fancy sleeping in late. On top of that, there’s a rooflight that affords romantic star gazers a window onto the night sky.

A good night’s sleep is guaranteed by the high-density, integrated polyfoam mattress and breathable cotton-blend walls. The walls are also insulted on the inside and feature a quilted design, with artwork that includes a mountain silhouette and Porsche logos. And don’t worry if the weather is less than perfect: there’s a separate rain cover and water-resistant zips to keep you dry.

‘Camp Porsche’ is quick and easy to erect. Simply pop the lockable safety latches and open the hardcase assisted by two gas pressure struts. All that’s left then is to position the telescopic ladder and add the four poles that keep the structure taut.

If you’re interested in the Porsche tent – and it’s hard to imagine that anyone wouldn’t be – it comes in a choice of black and light grey or black and dark grey for the hardcase, with a standard matt black Porsche logo on the side to advertise that this is no ordinary tent. You can also accessorise, with an optional inner tent, a heated blanket (oh yes) and a ‘shoe and bag’ organiser.

In fact, there’s just one problem I can see. Deliveries of the Porsche tent don’t start until November this year, which is hardly the time to go outdoorsy with a tent and a 911. Mind you, that does mean you’d have it in time for Christmas. And just imagine the joy of opening this on Christmas morning.

I won't comment on the price but I like the idea. Surely it's only a case of mounting adapters to put it on something more affordable like an older 911/Cayman etc?

Where does one put the cadac and gas cylinder for the morning fry up though............................?

What's the maximum roof loading for a 911?

Edit: it's 75kg. So, one average person without a tent. Or a tent with no people inside. Definitely not two people in a tent.

Hope they make it clear in the user manual that the 80mph limit is (presumably) with the thing collapsed. Imagine doing that speed with a couple of people asleep up there.

Don't really get the point of a tent on top of a 911? Why not just beside it? Or am I missing an added benefit.

75KG is the dynamic loading, static loading is many, many times higher than that and absolutely fine for the couple of hundred KGs two people and roof tent would weigh.

Putting roof tents on 911s is kind of a thing and well proven, this is just Porsche branding one of their own.

That's dynamic load, no? So 75kg bouncing along a country road at 60+. The static load will be way higher.

ETA not that this isn't stupid, just not for that reason. wink

I don't see the point either.

What's the matter with the floor?

I really don’t see the point either. . . When there are so many great tents to choose from, which are far more practical.

I love the fact that the end of the article links to a review of the 911 cabriolet, which sounds like pretty much the only Porsche this won't fit on. Mind you, I suppose it has a tent of its own...?

I thought about doing this (general camping not roof tent biggrin) in the lotus, then weather got bad and took the shed instead. Surprisingly it wasn't the space or transporting of the tent so much, but the unlevel ground at the campsite plot + low to the ground car that posed an issue. Was happy I took the shed.

If you can afford to scratch up a nice new Porsche with makeshift roofrack tent gear, you can afford a B&B/caravan as cheap insurance.

I saw a 996 with a roof tent last week. Given a big standard roof tent is £1000-1250 and hard shelled ones are double that the Porsche branding is worth a lot!

I’d like a Porsche and I don’t mind camping.
But I’d feel really stupid in my Porsche branded tent on my Porsche rather than in a tent on the grass next to the car.
However, should I find myself on a driving holiday somewhere with large non climbing wild predators I’ll bear it in mind.

For those that don't get roof tents, it's to keep you free of the crawlies.
However , an inflatable tent which fits into a large holdall is far more practical and far cheaper than £4k.
We have a 4berth tent even though there's only the 2 of us and its gone all over Europe. It gives standing room too something you don't get with roof tents.

I've got £250 that they sell less than 50 of these in the UK in the next 2 years and less than 200 in Europe in 12 months.

Talk about a niche product, that has a million competitors.

PS Do ALL of the windows have blackout blinds, including skylight etc (come on PH!)
