Just saying that if you or any of your family are thinking of going green on 2 wheels, perhaps you should take a look at this first.

I oscillated between OMG and LOL, 3:40 for example.

Is there a way to actually put out these battery fires before all the fuel is consumed?

The problem when you don’t have regulation. Escooters can be pretty dodgy safety wise.

You just submerge them in water. Same for phone batteries and electric cars...

Yeah, any battery can short circuit. but a selection of Chinese eScooters vs say a Dell Laptop or a Samsung/Apple phone ?

Much bigger battery, much less regulated and poorly engineered.

I suspect if you buy a quality scooter, or rent an official one, chances of it spontaneously combusting are pretty low.

Those examples are pretty terrifying, up there with chip pan fires.

There are now about half a million EV's on our roads, not heard of an epidemic of fires ? anyone else heard of any ?

I can see some logic there, but last year the battery in my Dell laptop was dying so I bought a replacement from China. Removed the original to replace it and sure enough that was made in China too!

Unless China is the name of the factory it’s probably not made int the same place! As you can imagine the range of quality can be very large between factories that make quality products vs those that make cheap ones.

You are far more likely to be in a fire in an ICE (more than 60x more likely). Fortunately EVs are extremely regulated.

I see that the trial scheme in Canterbury is to end as the scooter riders are viewed as riding too dangerously.

The range of quality between items being made on the same production line can be very large, as I understand you can specify down to component level what will be a batch run of a product, and that similar seeming end products some of which may or may not feature big brand logos can vary quite massively.

You just submerge them in water. Same for phone batteries and electric cars...
So the only place to safely charge them is in the bath, where you shouldn't have electricity...

If they do catch fire all you can do is to try and hook it with a broom/golf club and drag it outside to prevent more internal fabric and furnishings being further damaged (or charge it in garage with all the flammable stuff... biggrin

Scheme in Bristol recently extended, an excellent, innovative and flexible form of transport.

I think they're a good idea on principle but the market needs some proper regulation both in terms of how and where the things are ridden and the safety of the vehicles themselves.

Seems pretty clear cut to me.

The only ones that are road legal are the council ones. The council only uses the one, reliable and regulated, supplier.

They automatically cut out in given ‘no ride’ zones (gps based).

Its not really worth worrying about, most fires are probably caused by using incorrect chargers or buying really cheap things. People have been charging lithium ion batteries for years and very few have burnt their houses down. Its all down to the BMS (battery management system) circuits, of which 99% will do their job perfectly.

^ exactly this.

They actually look quite good fun but here in the UK our road infrastructure isn’t really suitable to support them.

Too fast for pavements (danger to pedestrians), too slow and unstable for roads (tiny wheels). Add in the likelihood of cheapo Chinese eBay specials exploding in your face and it’s clear the future of these little tinkers needs looking at.

Like a lot of things, great idea in principle but no thanks.
