Hi,

If a insurance company fits a black box in the car under the passenger glove box, will they know if it gets disconnected for 1 hour or a short time?
Would it just show that the car is off to them?

Or when the car is off does the black box still work?

Thanks

Depends on the type of black box.

Why would you want to disconnect it?

Just ring them and ask if it’s ok to disconnect.

Is this a rhetorical question?

No doubt if you told them your car was undergoing major repair work and that the battery would be disconnected for X number of days, they would understand.

Also no doubt that if you did that and then subsequently were involved in an accident whilst supposedly off the road, they would - legally and financially speaking - rip you a new hole...

Out of interest how does one go about track days with these things fitted? Some young folk might want to enjoy their car in a safe enviroment like sensible car ethusiasts but the insurance company would go nuts with the black box readings.

You don't. If you want to do track days, a black box policy is not for you. But I guess 99% of black box policies are sold to young drivers in low powered cars, who don't do track days, so it's not an issue.

My daughter's one had an internal battery that was constantly being charged by the 12v socket. No idea how long you would have to unplug it for, but is was working when the postman delivered it. That, knowing the post office, was probably at least a week.
