The "pat yourself on the back" thread.

I thought this would be a good topic, those moments to be proud of in life for whatever reason, no matter how big or small.

Now I will set the bar nice and low, and describe today's events.

Hurtling down the bypass at a swift 60 something in my van and all of a sudden the rear end of the exhaust decides to liberate itself from the front end in a horrendous orchestra of clanging metal. I pull into a bus stop full of people and inspect the damage.

An inquisitive bus w**ker inspects also and without much thought anounces it's busted.

Not on my watch I mutter as I rummage through the van for supplies. A length of old copper and some zip ties later and voila, I have created a makeshift exhaust splint. With an air of smugness I set off, wondering if the zip ties would survive the exhaust heat (they didn't). I gingerly made my way to a nearby screwfix and replaced the melted mess of zip ties with some chunky jubilee clips.

Quite pleased with that. It had an air of Apollo 13 ingenuity about it if I say so myself and it allowed me to get on with the days work and worry about a proper repair at the weekend.

Having driven Opel Kadett Cs for 20 years, I always have two wire coat hangers ( folded) in my toolset for that exhaust reason.

They have helped others to get into their cars after locking - in their own keys twice.

My Mk5 Fiesta door mirror was held on by electrical tape for years. I was able to wrap it around the join in a way to make it look less obvious unless you were close up too
