A110 R gets exclusive Fernando Alonso Edition

32 cars for the Spaniard's 32 F1 wins, each a tiny little bit more awesome than the standard R

It’s been a while since the world has seen a special edition named after a racing driver; kudos to anyone that could remember the ‘British Legends Edition’ Porsche 911s attributed to Derek Bell, Nick Tandy and Richard Attwood. Now Alpine has resurrected a niche we thought disappeared with the C4 by Loeb - say hello to the A110 R Fernando Alonso.

On the face of it, this ticks all the boxes to qualify (pun very much intended) as another special edition cashing in on a famous racy face. There won’t be very many (just 32, because Alonso has won 32 Grand Prix), it’s only available in the matt blue paint of Alpine’s F1 car and, of course, there’s his signature in the rear quarter window. So far, so racing driver special, even down to the orange calipers, because that’s ‘Nando’s colour.

But there is more to the A110 R Fernando Alonso than meets the eye. The regular R is already a mouth-watering prospect, what with its slender kerbweight and track focus, and the Alonso ups the ante further. Apparently signed off by the two-time champ himself at Barcelona, this A110 R can have its ride height dropped by 10mm - for track use only, you understand - thanks to a shim at the base of the springs. Apparently, in just a few quick and easy steps you’ll get the ‘Fernando Alonso feel’ in the version that bears his name.

Alright, so it’s hardly a huge overhaul, but it’s something. Additional Alonso-specific tweaks include a bit more paint for the carbon bits (but then a black rear section where it’s painted on the R), more orange inside and a 1-32 numbered plaque that details the date and location of each race win.

Additionally, Alonso’s motto - “There is more than one path to the top of the mountain” - has been etched into the sun visor, so, for heaven’s sake, don’t forget your sunglasses. You don’t want to have to see that any more than once to check they’ve actually done it.

For the moment, exactly how the 32 A110s will be divvied up among the world’s Alpine and Alonso enthusiasts hasn’t been confirmed. Every single one of the few, however, will get a signed replica helmet, the lucky devils. No word on price, yet, either, though hopefully this Alonso edition is a little more affordable than the last - a Ferrari 599 GTB with his signature on will cost you a quarter of a million quid…

Sorry. It already looks like some young hooligans cars that been sprayed and had naff wheels put on it. All you need is the banging exhaust ,smoke a joint and do some donuts in the Halfords car park 'wiv your beats going' innit and you'd fit right in.

Hypothetical scenario: In a rain-soaked, topsy-turvy race with a few odd strategy decisions, some penalties and a Safety Car period or two, Alonso takes another win.

Will they make one more car?

It's funny they're doing this after he's announced he's leaving the team at the end of this season.

No doubt there'll be a an Alonso Edition Aston Martin Vantage next year.

Grumpy old man vibes here I feel... Don't think I've ever seen a hooligan in a track spec sports car before with genuine parts and performance.

I've seen plenty of mid 30 year olds that are doing well for themselves and like a drivers car for the weekend and track days.

Think the car looks fantastic and the limited numbers will only help with the exclusivity.

Just think of poor Schumacher back in the day
