My daughter has a private plate on retention in my name (I bought it on her behalf). It’s her 18th birthday in a few weeks and we’ve bought her a car as a surprise present. The car is also currently in my name.

Both the plate and car will eventually be in her name but having never had a private plate previously I’m not sure of the best way to go about it. Is it better to transfer the plate to the car whilst both are in my name then transfer the car to her, or transfer the plate and car to her individually?

Daft question, but I wasn’t sure if transferring the plate to the car first would mean it would then stay with that car for life? Thanks.

It costs £80 to transfer the plate so the best way to do it is give the car to her with the plate on and that will cost zero.

I also think this would be the way to go. The plate can be removed by her when she sells the car and put it back on retention.

You may wish to call the DVLA to confirm all of that but I think that is correct.

It doesn't cost £80 to put the plate on the car, the money has already been paid to put it on retention.

He's not saying that. He's saying it will cost £80 to transfer title of the plate to the daughter before it's applied to a vehicle.

Which you don’t need to do, put the plate that’s yours on the car that’s yours and give it to your daughter.

When she sells the car she can put the plate on retention at a cost of £80 or whatever it is then…..

You don't need to transfer the certificate into anybody else's name, you can fill in the box to assign the reg to a car not in your name.

It's how registrations on retention get sold to each other and then put onto cars. It can be done online (easier) or by post. If you really HAVE to put somebody else's name on it, they can be added to the retention certificate as a nominee, but it still has to stay in the original person's name. smile
