Has anyone ever been on a Rally driving experience day?

I have seen forest school North Wales and Phil Price Rally School both of which look good.

Planning on booking a few driving type events for myself next year.

Many thanks,

Gave the Phil Price one to my brother as a birthday present and went with him on the day, that must be easily 10 years ago now so maybe things have changed!
He really enjoyed it and I know he recommended it to others.

Did one at Brands Hatch. Great fun, but mostly because it was January and had just snowed heavily. Piloting a GT86 (rally tyres, ABS and TC fuse pulled) around ice, snow and mud was not quick, but was entertaining.

I did a half day with the TI Rally school near York, learning to control a rally-prepped Escort Mk2 on slicks on a wet airfield. That was really fun, the car just wants to go sideways all the time and the pace notes come at you really fast!

I did half a day at Forrest Rally Experience in Powys, years ago when it was Higgins Rally School. Expensive but also worth it.

After all if you're going to do a rally experience may as well do it in rally country.

Did the Phil price about 5 years ago.... epic!

Phil has sadly died now, but it still gets good reviews. Presumably someone else scares you senseless at the end of the day now!

Another one here who has been to the Phil Price Rally School, albeit many, many years ago.

A Christmas/birthday present from my dad, who had done some historic rallying himself and would no doubt have researched the best places to go.

I did one near York - around 16 years ago, I think - may have been the same one?

Definitely in a mk2 Escort, though was on dirt and was my first experience of power oversteer (plenty of lift-off practice had occurred prior hehe). I flattened a cone and got a time penalty for doing so but still came first out of the group on the day. Got to stand on the top step of the podium and everything.

Still got the trophy somewhere.

We all got a passenger lap with one of the instructors. That was eye-opening.

I'd definitely recommend.

That sounds exactly like what I did, I had bubbly to spray, though I didn't flatten any cones on the timed lap wink. Part of it was on dirt, part of it on the old concrete runway.

Haha yep, bubbly as well!

Must be the same place. Was a cracking day.

You will love it. If you're travelling far, you could always stop over at Ludlow as I did with the clients I took. Plenty of good restaurants. There is a good one with rooms right on the river.

Every 'track' driving experience I've done has left me feeling like the drive to/from was just as exciting (fortunate to have semi interesting cars admittedly)

The one exception was the Bill Gwynne rally school day I did, most fun on 4 wheels sliding a classic Impreza turbo around biggrin

Enjoy biggrin You've also now got me looking at these days again too!

Done two:

Birkbeck rally school, North Yorks. Intense, and fast, and great fun!

Battle of the thoroughbreds (impreza and Evo) in Dalby FOrest. Few "have a go" laps really, but was cheap. ...and in legendary Dalby Forest.

Both great but different, then they show you why you're a plumber/teacher/accountant/whatever and not a rally driver...! wink

Was at Phil Price at the weekend, great day with lots of seat time. The rear drive imprezas were nice to drive and the 4wd one had amazing grip in the mud and gravel. Well worth it and all the staff were very nice.

I was thinking about this last week so will look at the Phil Price also.

I did one around 22 years ago at Oulton Park, in a Escort Cosworth on gravel. Lots of sliding about and a jump if I remember rightly.

Also been here wasn't cheap but was worth it I thought I was doing fairly well until David Higgins took me out in the mk2 completely flicking the car sideways at an angle I thought we were going into trees on Gravel at an easy 70mph whilst midway through the manovere he takes one hand off the steering to adjust the strap on his glove before correcting the slide and powering off like nothing happened. Different level of skills for sure

In 2018 we went to the London Rally school (I think it was at least not that far from silverstone) with a couple of friends when we were on a Uk trip. It was a full day with an mk2 and an impreza, we are all pretty fast asphalt drivers, so it was fun that the instructor worked with that and really pushed us to get faster on dirt, though it was a bit challenging sitting on the wrong side smile

Mk2 was slower but more fun smile
