Morgan refreshes Plus Four and Six for 2023

Don't let the familiar face fool you; the four-wheeled Mog has been given quite the spruce up

Morgan doesn’t have it easy when it comes to releasing a mid-life product refresh. It’s a balancing act of cramming in new technology and light styling tweaks without overegging the bake and putting off customers who love the traditional appeal. So, Morgan fans, you’ll be happy to know that the newly announced 2023 update for the Plus Four and Plus Six focuses on perfecting the recipe – rather than rewriting it.

Peel back the familiar bodywork and you’ll find a number of upgrades and refinements. The biggest, and likely most controversial, update here is the introduction of electronic stability control. It’s there to prevent any sudden snaps of oversteer, which the current generation can be prone to with all that BMW turbo torque, but you can thankfully dial it down by selecting Sport or Sport+ driving modes. These driving modes have also been reworked on cars fitted with the eight-speed auto, improving the snappiness of shifts in the sportier settings. There’s new hardware, too. Both the Plus Four and Six benefit from all-new AP Racing brakes, while new bushes and dampers should provide a step up in ride quality.

The rest of the 2023 refresh centres around jazzing up the cabin, highlighted by a new aluminium dashboard panel that can be specced in either silver, black or finished in the body colour. Don’t worry, the updated Mog has still got wood. Specifically, three new veneer options, including ‘Engineered’, which fuses aluminium strips with wood in a way that looks a bit like teak decking on the back of a yacht. It looks right at home on the inside of new models, though the same still can’t be said for the BMW-style drive selector that you get on automatic models, which, unfortunately, hasn’t been changed for the facelift. At least the LCD driver’s display has been given a bump up in quality and you still get good old fashioned analogue dials that have undergone a redesign.

Morgan is particularly proud of the new Sennheiser audio system. Sennheiser makes some of the best audio equipment on the planet, and it’s worked closely with Morgan to develop a system that packs a punch while keeping weight to a minimum. Quite how that translates into a sports car with no fixed roof is to be seen, but Sennheiser will be using its trick ‘AMBEO Contrabass algorithm’. It’s a clever bit of software that optimises audio depending on the environment the listener is in. So, if you’ve got the top down, you should still be able to clearly hear your Spotify playlist or, say, the voice of a softly spoken podcast host.

“The Plus line in 2023 presents a marked evolution of the four-wheeled Morgan. As with any enduring design, it is crucial to strike a balance between moving forward whilst complementing established product qualities”, said design chief Jonathan Wells. With the Plus Four and Six boasting over 70 years of ‘established product qualities’, it’s little wonder Morgan decided to leave the exterior styling untouched for the 2023 update. That being said, it’s created six styling options that have been designed with the new interior in mind, but if you choose your own spec if you don’t like people telling you what to do. You can even assign a ‘pilot’ and ‘co-pilot’ call sign that’ll be displayed on the side of the car.

If that sounds like your cup of tea, then you’d better head over to a Morgan dealer sharpish. Orders are open now, with deliveries set to kick off in January. Better get thinking of your call sign, then…

More significantly, its got redesigned doors which are substantial enough to embed speakers into … hopefully that means they've re-engineered the whole door rather than a just quick job of just bolstering the thickness ...

Current BMWs have the switch-style drive selector. Shame the Mog hasn't been updated to this. At least it would look a little less incongruous

ESC might be a good shout. I rented one from Oakmere and rather enjoyed it. They definately need a bit of respect. Couple of weeks later the same car turned up on Copart in a very sorry state.

I want to like these but certain aspects of the interior bug me. I find the steering wheel a little bland and unfortunately that auto gear lever is far too recognisable given the 'bespoke' nature of Morgans.

I do get them though and why they are in demand.

Screen. Why? Fancy dials. Why? Get some classic Jaeger dials and that's it. Radio. Why? In a Morgan?? Otherwise - thank the Higher Beeing that they still exists. Ah! And forget about the autobox in the Plus Four. Go manual!

I get that they need to move with the times but feel they are losing some of the bare bones appeal of such a car. When we are all driving electric auto's we will look back on the earlier cars with such fondness. With an auto box though it just really becomes another average drive car. Might as well buy an Z4.

Can't say I'm too impressed with the interior. Neither proper old style or new. The whole dash just looks a bit threadbare and cheap. Last generation, especially the Aero cars, were a lot nicer...

I obviously don't know if you've drivcen an auto Plus4 or not or if you're a victim of the PH auto=bad knee-jerk but the auto box suits the car really well and for anyone who isn't Chris Harris it makes a massive difference to long-distance driveability because you actually have somewhere for BOTH your feet to go in the footwell.

As for the screens and this new minimalism, I don't mind it at all and the radio is essential on long drives because not everyone drives a Morgan for fun on A-roads 100% of the time - sometimes there's a Motorway schlep involved before the fun.

All that compromise for having a 1930s style car made on a wooden frame, all that heritage, the waiting list, the fact they are fairly expensive and you have to have a modern 8 speed auto ?

Is there no option or any hope of a manual ? I know the ZF8 is very good but it just seems like visiting a stately home and finding the wooden staircase has been replaced with an Escalator. just seems a weird combination however well it works, like a seven Series BMW with a manual or Kia Rio with a sequential straight cut box.

Toyota managed to find a manual box to pair with the B58 in the Supra.

The Morgan website shows a Manual for the 4-pot, looks nice and performance isn’t shabby. I don’t think they’ve dropped it woohoo

I looked at those on the web, also the configuration thing, from 2022 came up with this color :-) first I choose the dark green, but this looks even better (to me)

How much side impact protection do these have? Not much by the look of it.

I must have missed the part where these were now auto-only - I drove a manual Plus4 earlier this year and then an auto before deciding the auto was the better car. I'd assumed that the manual was still available with the new interior.

Quite. If I found that combo in a kit car I would laugh out loud.

I’m liking these more and more but my issue is the headrests spoiling the line. Not only that but it also makes it look like the driver is, or would be, sitting too high. Just me?

Why do you want speakers in the doors? It's a Morgan not a Rolls Royce! You won't be able to hear them anyway.

You can take the headrest out, so there goes one 'problem' for you thumbup
