Bought a car earlier this year from Cazoo and took out an extended warranty (valid until June 2023).

Recently there has been juddering / drive train failure /engine management lights on the dashboard.

3 separate garages have had a look (including BMW) and the latest diagnosis based on a scan of the vehicle is potentially a gearbox problem.

I contacted the warranty company and they confirmed that a replacement gearbox would be covered under the warranty but diagnostic work only covered up to £60 per hour plus VAT.

The garage told me that it would take many hours to take out and strip down the gearbox for diagnosis and then there would be no guarantee that the issue was covered under the warranty and I could be £1000's out of pocket.

A new gearbox does look in the range of £5000.

Is it not possible to fully diagnose the fault without taking components apart or do the codes simply not give enough information ?

Also, could I not get a reconditioned gearbox ?

Thanks in advance.

Diagnostic work is generally plugging in the computer to fault find, not stripping something down.

The £60 per hour diagnostic is the use of the diagnostic computer, surely they can tell from that if it is the gearbox.

Also how long have you had the car? Up to 6 months you are covered by the consumer rights acts, if so I would bypass the warranty and go direct to the garage to deal with it.

It may not be the gearbox itself, its more likely the gearbox ECU at fault.
Has the car been driven through any floods recently?
