So tonight was coming home from my friends house on a road i know like the back of my hand drive it spirited a few times but with caution but hadn't eaten all day so was hungry so maybe my mind was a little bit off it i overtook a slow car and I mean annoyingly slow braking 4 times into every bend on a nice clear straight and the next twisty fun section i didn't even give it a look but later found out there was a flood sign there come out of the bend not too quick hit and oh ste i was a passenger near enough car got lifted up near enough i stayed in the throttle and didn't touch the brakes or steering much at all when it was happening right thing to do? Anyway i think luckily only left hand side ended up in the bushes and so far it looks like numberplate bracket slight dent in wing and bumper guess it could have gone way worse managed to get back on the road aswel so basically it was a keep going moment there was no one behind me for miles otherwise I would have stopped.

I do feel like a bit of a tw!!! though to be honest I'm quite annoyed with my self more than anything but it was my own fault with observation think I'll be binge watching reg locals videos again learned allot in terms of my normal fun driving with limit points and the like but i felt like this one wasn't even savable it's a light car and I'm lowered aswel so it was basically a boat maybe i needed a mk3 lol instead of a mk1 definitely ate some humble pie tonight that's for damn sure

Very glad it was not more serious. Have made mistakes myself in the past so not a driving God. Hope it is not too expensive.

Funnily enough, the only time I've spun a car on the road was in an MX-5. It was new to me, I was running late to get to the airport, and I really shouldn't have hit the throttle halfway round a damp bend on very marginal tyres. Luckily the only damage was the destruction of one of the knackered tyres as I slid backwards into the kerb. I even made my flight after a very rapid tyre change!
As the OP said, it's all about learning from our mistakes.

I collected one brand new on a very wet day in 2000.

The dealer was just off a large roundabout and I. Was warned 3 times not to spin it on the roundabout on its brand new tyres, as apparently on a wet day, this was quite common and a few were driven straight back into the body shop.

I have to say, when the Advan’s wore out and Were replaced with Pilots, the damp surface lairyness was greatly reduced.

Your humility is a good sign. So many cars would be in a ditch without the nannies. Chalk it up to experience. Enjoy and learn from the mk1 so you can really appreciate faster cars.
Most drivers of fast cars really are clueless. Good that you know you made a mistake and want to learn.

Yes, I gave up after three lines.

I hope the OP and his car are OK, whatever happened.

Familiar roads often the most dangerous!

Anyway main thing is to learn the lesson, and be grateful it wasn't worse. I havealways been wary of aquaplaning since a similar incident t many years ago.

Familiarity can be extremely dangerous. I used to ride a Honda Fireblade to work, travelling down a fabulous winding road in Hertfordshire. I’d do it every single day, back and forth. I’d push myself more and more each time trying to cut corners by a millimeter at a time. Until I went round a corner and hit some spilled diesel. The back went out but I just managed to catch it in time. I pulled up as soon as possible and thanked the biking gods that I’d survived. I sold the bike fairly soon after. The whole experience not helped by the fact I’d lost a couple of biking mates to accidents that year.

We tend to have a lot of flood signs near us, even when it is dry. The thing is, those places are liable to flood, do create nasty hazards. I am cautious about potential flood areas. We seem to be having a lot of flash rains lately - tipping down one moment, dry the next.

I’ve done the ‘I can soldier on and go at the legal max’ - but luckily that aquaplaning experience was on a straight road (M6 around Birmingham). Lesson learnt.

Hope it’s only light damage.

That was me as well, young and foolish, 90mph on the A1, middle of the night, no traffic, very wet road, marginal tyres on a Fiat 124- suddenly afloat. Lesson also learned!

Nearly 30 years ago, I used to drive round this every morning. One morning, I went round it at my usual speed, and immediately ran wide, mounted the kerb, and hit the hedge. No damage to the car but couldn't understand what happened until I walked onto the road and nearly slipped over. Used cooking oil by the smell of it.

Indeed, but I have a friend who lost half his leg after aquaplaning across a dual carriageway many years ago, I always slow right down when I think there’s a chance of standing water. The OP mentioned that he’d stayed on the throttle, I was taught that it’s best to stay off all pedals and hang on tight.
