The dvla seems to be much stricter now with not declaring a sorn etc immediately and one of the letters look as though even you can get a fine for not declaring it as uninsured .

How are the fines calculated exactly? I acquired a vehicle on 19.10.22 (dated on the v5) then after several attempts at trying to declare it as sorn with the ref number I gave up for a few weeks and still does nothing
Then the late post arrives today with a fine for £39 .(dated 3rd dec)

My other 2 vehicles I forgot to sorn/didn’t get the tax reminder for were acquired on .
14.09.22
14.11.22

Does this mean I might end having to pay a lot more if the above amount is only for a 2 week period

Your understanding of the word "forgot" is unusual, I think you meant "ignored"

Well been trying to sort it for a few hours already today .not exactly made it easy.
The ref numbers on the forms/logbooks don’t work either .

Maybe I will end up just taxing them as it accepts it that way lo

.I've been working on a car in the garage decided to leave until next week but with tax only being £20 a year I just left it. I had a couple of letters I'd pushed aside but received final warning the other day so had to make it SORN. £13 cheque back in the post hehe

That’s interesting, these are bikes with £20 tax but the fine was for 39£ for 2 weeks.

I’m thinking now off just taxing them as still can’t get them to go on a sorn .

You can't "declare as uninsured" - you have to sorn. If it's taxed, or untaxed but not sorned, then it has to be insured.

We've had CIE - Continuous Insurance Enforcement - for 10yrs now!

Yes so even if I did tax them instead with the intention of not insuring them I would then get the £100 fixed penalty x 3 vehicles instead of the unpaid tax .given up for now trying to sorn them ,what a ridiculous scandalous system !

Not too many people have problems with it. Do everything online between the hours of 07:00 - 19:00hrs and I never have a problem.
