Watch the epic Tuthill Porsche Safari film here

Earned some me time this festive period? Enjoy an hour of incredible Porsche rallying, courtesy of Tuthill

Some things you know are going to be good just from the names involved. The Alfa Giulia SWB Zagato was guaranteed to be spectacular, for example. And same for this video: it documents Tuthill Porsche’s adventures at this year’s East African Safari Classic Rally. It’s 70 minutes long, filmed by Petroleum&Co, edited by Oak Lane, and features all manner of stunning 911 rally cars. This is undoubtedly going to be an hour and a bit very well spent over the festive period.

So much so, in fact, that we’ve not watched it all ourselves yet, exactly because it’s the kind of video best saved for some proper free time and a nice drink to go alongside. The first few minutes feel like a cinematic experience; best to treat the Tuthill video like one. Get it on the biggest screen you can, for starters, and the best speakers.

There’s nothing much to say about the nitty gritty, then, although the stunning pictures below should give you a good idea of what to expect. What we can say, though, is it was another successful Safari for Tuthill. Having been postponed from its original November 2021 running date, the Safari ran through February this year. Look away now if you don’t want any spoilers…

Sadly there wasn’t a victory in 2022, though there was a second-place finish, five Tuthill-prepared cars in the top 10 and another four in the first 20 finishers. A pretty good result then, especially considering the Kenya first-timers - and some who’d never even rallied before!

Richard Tuthill said of this year’s event: "The Safari rally is unique; it always has been it always will be. This year was no exception. The rescheduled date meant the climate was hotter and harsher than ever. Added to this we went North for the first time in a long time. The roads up there are extremely tough!

"Measuring success is of course subjective. But in my mind this year, more than any was a huge success. An amazing bunch of clients including many debuting not only in rallying terms but also in safari terms led to a team atmosphere which was very, very special. Second place and 6 cars in the top 10 was quite an achievement and only made possible with a team of crazily great people.  Can’t wait till the next one!" Enjoy the video - should be pretty special…

What a great film. Worth a watch people - fantastic videography and editing throughout.

Clearly an epic experience, but one that does require (very) deep pockets! Maybe someday...

Ooh. That was fab. Great way to spend lots of money. Ken Block was surprisingly poor.

Didn't Ken win a stage early on, then blew out both back tyres early in another which ruined his rally?

He also seemed less communicative than I would have imagined someone in the US media spotlight might be, but perhaps he was in more of a 'professional driver' mode (some of the most fun and extrovert people I know change completely when they are racing) and learning to drive quickly in a new and exacting environment. He certainly had speed but perhaps needed to find a rhythm?

If you enjoy this and are looking for a further fix then there is also an older Tuthill sanctioned video of the earlier 2013 running of the East Africa rally on YT. A little less polished production (but not by much) and the content is just as good.

If i've got it right its, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3_yBf4N6IE for those interested … but a search with "Tuthill safari rally" is sure to turn it up.

Thats a couple of hours taken care of, have fun!

Call me a party pooper if you will...but there's something about a bunch of guys paying £115K to rent a Porsche to race it over "open" roads in a developing country which leaves a sour taste.

If the roads were "closed" as per an WRC event - that would be fine - but it's only a matter of time before a local on his motorbike / moped or a local school bus is collected by one of these amateur "racers" and there's tragic fatality.

There's a wiff of post-colonial "Gumball 3000" about tis event.

I pondered about that. But it isn’t just foreigners in buttlered Porsches, there are lots of other amazing vehicles and local drivers who do really well. And the competition stages look so sparsely populated that risks are probably very low. I’m sure they have insurance and the cost of that can be the killer for these events.
Personally I’d worry less about school buses and more about giraffes, they look like they move on casters.
The drives between stages are probably more dangerous than the race.

If this rally gives back to the local community...and it sounds like it does e.g. new schools etc...then it's a net positive.

It's just a little uncomfortable having to discuss guessing which way a local on a moped will go...when encountered on a competitive rally stage...let alone trucks & buses.

I'd like to think that the rally organisers replaced the barbed-wire fence which was taken out - as that is important to keeping stock off the roads & these animals are the livelihood & major assets of the local people.
