Our Mk4 Focus ST is great on smooth, resurfaced roads but it hates this time of year when the pot holes appear. There are a few crevasses that have opened up on regularly travelled roads near me which can and do damage tyre sidewalls, wheels and suspension, so I was wondering what others do. Fit steelies with high profile, winter rubber?

ETA: we do drive around them where possible!

The roads are as bad as I can remember. There are huge potholes everywhere including major roads. People are reporting them, but they aren't getting fixed in a reasonable timeframe.

It also reads as if the council aren't accepting any claims at all. They are quick with dismissing cases even for reported potholes they've been too slow to fix.

I'm seriously considering going back to a Range Rover: my Jaguar XF Sportbrake (on 20" rims with 35 section tyres) has cracked both rear rims within the last two months.

It's getting a bit ridiculous - only a few quid to have them welded, but it's the inconvenience (and I'm not thrilled about running welded rims on a 150mph+ car).

Went up in profile on the Aston, luckily this part of Kent had lots of resurfacing in the Summer, but there is a few places showing some potholes now not big though.

I am glad I made the switch back to normal tyres and have 40 and 35 profiles but quite some sidewall to them smile

NW London and nearly every road here has a pothole you would need a team of Himalayan sherpas to climb out of, which has made driving my C63 more like Mario Kart.

I am guessing the bad weather (snow followed by torrential rain) can't have helped

The other thing I have noticed is blocked drains leading to high flooding - junction of Bishops Ave / A1 is particularly bad
To the extend the bus I was on chose to drive down the wrong side of the A1 rather than chance it!

When we bought a the Mrs's new car last year one of her requirements was 'big bouncy tyres', as she was fed up of trying avoid every pothole in the road in the outgoing Focus ST.

In fact we even opted for the lesser 18" wheels over the 19" ones just to get some tyres with a decent bit of sidewall purely due to the state of our roads.

On this topic, went to view a couple of Leon Estates yesterday and en route, the road (A Road) was a state with potholes all over the place. The recent cold weather has really done a number on it.

The two cars we were viewing were a luxury spec Xcellence with 225/45 R17's and a Cupra with 235/35 R19's and as this will be a family hack, I decided the Cupra wasn't worth the hassle so have gone for the comfort suspension and the fairly high profile tyres.

We're deep into austerity now and potholes are an easy thing to cut back on.

It's running stock 235/35 19". Would it be worth trying 40s instead?

I wish they would cut back on potholes, my local authority insist on on filling them with a biscuit like substance that washes away in the rain.
