As an experienced high mileage driver with a powerful ICE car who’s done all manner of driving courses and participated in motor sports, I’m no stranger to maxing out a car.

In other words, if I decide to hoof it l know what’s comes next, have weighed up the road conditions, considered other road users etc, etc before letting fly.

With the advent of electric propulsion, the explosive acceleration my car is capable of is available to all.

This bothers me.

Several times in the last few months I’ve encountered “stressed mother” types in Audi Etrons and similar either going like bats out of hell or pulling away from lights and junctions in the manner of a scolded cat with a red-hot poker up its arse.
Are these people in control of the vehicle? I’d suggest not.

Hitting 0-60 in 4 seconds or less requires a certain awareness of one’s surroundings coupled with a knowledge of the vehicles responses & capabilities should something not go quite to plan.

In my experience, a lot of electric drivers haven’t acquired the skill sets to handle the performance.

At the moment electric is an expensive proposition therefore limiting to whom these vehicles are available. Won’t be long though before they start to filter down the food chain as 3rd, 4th,5th hand and become as cheaply available as a ripe for modding as a Corsa, Focus, Honda is now.

This is scary, if as a 19/20-year-old I’d had that level of performance available I wouldn’t be typing this now.

The government/road safety lobby wants to, and has, put automatic speed limiters in new cars. The idea presumably is we drive everywhere at a constant 20mph saving lives, the NHS and planet as we go.

Going to work well that when you can hit 20mph in under 0.5 of a second.

Thoughts PH ‘ers?

Acceleration should be limited. For all our sakes. It’s the resulting electrical/magnetic fields that are most damaging.

Lol'ing at the first few replies. 30 years ago 17 year olds used to drive around in old bangers 1 litre cars etc. Now they could be in a "rented" tesla model 3, accident waiting to happen.

EVs are a one trick pony. That trick is acceleration.

At the moment the only way they counter any questions about capability is by “yeah but it gets to 60 in 3 seconds”. This drives adoption by wkers who think 0 to 60 is the benchmark of a good car.

As things move forward, and they become more mainstream, 0 to 60 times will increase. In fact given the drive for “safety” by aholes like E NCAP etc I expect 0 to 60 will end up with a minimum legislated number.

Mind you, once they drive themselves 0 to 60 is irrelevant.

What a load of rubbish spoken by someone who hasn't Iived with an EV.

0-60 predates and has been used as a benchmark for performance cars for a very long time. Just because many EVs are faster than most ICE performance cars, people like you claim that suddenly as a measure it is pointless...

I take it as my Tesla Model 3 Performance hit 100 mph in 8.5 seconds and would do the quarter mile is 11.8 seconds, that is also irrelevant. It also cost very little to run and was extremely effortless to drive.

One of my employees is 22 and went from a slow Audi A4 to a Tesla M3 LR. He's died 8 times in the last year!

Which morons? People who drive EVs, or just anyone who joins a motorway at 40mph?

Keep an eye on the IIHS for data: https://www.iihs.org/ratings/insurance-losses-by-m...

Their data has a bit of lag so it's to 2020 currently. If you're able to wrangle the reports you'll see that powerful electric vehicles are overrepresented and powerful "luxury" vehicles are also overrepresented.

If it actually manifests - which it won’t - then it will translate into higher insurance premiums with black boxes to reduce for EVs. Won’t happen though because the real accident waiting to happen is boomers with deflated egos trying to race an electric car with yesterdays technology. Net net it’ll work itself out in this fantasy scenario

In response to a post saying EV acceleration times are what people quote to counter criticism of EVs you quote the acceleration times.

Line hook sinker. Or something.

It doesn't happen mate. If I was in a RS4 being goaded by a Model 3 I would piss myself laughing at the absurdity.
