Mercedes SL65 AMG | Spotted

Not all V12s are screamers...

What does the perfect V12 performance car look like to you? For many of us, it’ll likely have a sky-high redline, a shrieking exhaust note that’ll leave tunnel walls shaking, and it’ll probably be Italian. The reason being is that, aside from the Purosangue and the odd luxury barge, a screaming supercar is one of the only ways to get your hands on a current twelve-cylinder engine.

Not that I’m complaining. The more supercars that make a song and dance about what they’re packing under their, er, engine cover, the better. But this Mercedes SL65 AMG caught the eye because it harks back to a bygone era, where V12 power didn’t always require ear defenders. Sure, the twelve-cylinder engine has become a staple of Bentley and Rolls-Royce’s flagship barges, but the SL65 was even more brazenly about brute force. It could wipe the floor with most supercars of its era with a simple press of the kickdown switch - and yet still hunker down and play the effortless grand tourer on a Calais to Nice blast.

The numbers generated by its largely hand-built M275 twin-turbo V12 were utterly ludicrous when the SL65 launched in 2004, and could still give most supercars a run for their money today. Its 6.0-litre engine developed 612hp and 738lb ft of torque, the latter a new record for a production car at the time. That, of course, is all funnelled through a five-speed torque converter before it reaches the rear wheels, plus a hefty lump of traction control to stop the thing from lighting up when the turbos kick in. Even with it, the SL65 came under fire from some critics for its lively rear end, which is remarkable given how nannying early traction control systems could be.

Pace was searing, with 60mph coming about in just 3.6 seconds (assuming you'd moved anywhere) blitzing pretty much everything on four wheels at the time. And while the SL65 was a spruced-up GT car at heart, AMG still went to the effort of fitting stiffer dampers and a mechanical limited-slip diff. Mercedes’ Active Body Control system is onboard to help conceal the flagship's 2.1-tonne mass, although in truth you'd probably do just as well to leave everything in its softest setting and let the thunderous exhaust note do the talking.

Ultimately, the SL65 was the pinnacle of an otherwise impressively versatile performance car - and even if Mercedes had some trouble finding buyers willing to pay its huge asking price, it is a testament to a very different age. It sounded incredible, looked the part with multi-piece alloy wheels and had all the creature comforts you could possibly want from a luxury GT car. All told, fewer than 100 examples made their way across the channel, but the fact that around 60 per cent of them are still on the road suggests that more than a few were cherished.

Of course, comparative rarity makes finding a clean, low-mileage example potentially tricky, but this looks to be just the ticket. R230 SLs aren’t known for being completely trouble-free, but a full Mercedes service history and a modest 61,000 miles on the clock suggest this example has been well looked after. All for a thigh-slapping £41,990. Or, to put it another way, around £100,000 off the original asking price. It goes without saying that we’ll never see a car like it again; now’s your chance to see out the decade with a hero-qualifying single-digit MPG readout.

What a monster.

When I think about the R230 range, Mercedes really had something for everyone; from the bottom of the range SL 350 (which I owned) all the way up to this beast! A friend of mine owns one of these and although he's always complained about the fuel costs, I know he'll never sell it.

That torque figure still makes me laugh. I also believe it was *limited* to that value to protect that gearbox.

Can see these in a museum one day with a Spitfire and Deltic heralding high water marks of the combustion era.

Ha ha…!! What a great thing, who knew - 20 years ago was the high water mark?!

Actually - I think we did know, especially when MB were pretty much doing ‘any engine in any model variant’… (not quite the V12 - but most others - up to the M156) I think it’s AOK to pine for & lament that these days are sadly gone…

Say what you want but that interior has aged beautifullly. Throw a CarPlay unit/function in it and it's literally al you'll ever need.

Its peak Mercedes and unlikely nothing will ever top it. Price is ridiculously cheap now for what it is. Only problem with them is how 98% of them are boring color combination. Silver/black or black/black almost all of them.

To me, one of the best-looking SL's of all. Love the exterior and interior, those rims and that ridiculous engine. Would love to have one of them. Failing that, I could also happily slum it in a 55.

With that much Torque, this thing would out accelerate most contemporary cars (to say 120mph) with a 1 speed gear box.

Styling wise, this was MBs finest hour, nothing as good looking has come out of their stables since IMO.

I was just thinking that. MB absolutely nailed interiors in this era. Aston Martin dashboard designers take note.

Absolutely stunning ! Agree with what’s been said, MB haven’t improved on this and the that interior still looks great !

Playing with a lesser model one of these at the moment, the humble SL500. What a lovely thing, I am supposed to be doing it up and selling for a friend, but I’ll probably end up paying him for the car - it’s that good, and will have had all the issues addressed.

SL65 the pinnacle at the time, and much cheaper now and easier to get along with than the SLR of similar vintage.

These are really maturing into a classic, was gorgeous when new but went into that Old Merc hinterland. I dont think modern Mercs tend to be too bad looking as a rule (Compared to BMWs more recent stuff in a lot of cases) but that era was a good one, we have an old CLK from 2005 and always think its a rather handsome old woofer and it has this proper Merc louche lope to it, cant hurry it but its rather pleasant.

Now this is epic, but not sure it needs all that power, for an eighth or less of the price, how about an SL350.

Still reasonably brisk, 7 sec to sixty and it doesnt have the ABC suspension system, which I know is good but as a cheap top down cruiser from 4 to 15 grand, seems like a decent deal with less to go wrong, later facelifted ones had another 70 bhp which knocks a second off that 0-60, available from 9/10 grand up,

If you go for a pre March 2006 model, you get the £300 odd, instead of £600 odd VED.

Just me or is that a bit of a bargain ?

I’ve got a 55 plate 350. Bought it 3.5 years ago for £8k as a run around. As you say no ABC to go wrong, but the roof seals, vacuum pump and brake light sensor issues can be a right pain.

It is a fab thing though - wafty, very comfortable, good looking inside and out, and the folding metal roof best of both worlds. I’ve driven a 55 a couple of times which was fab, but the 65 is in a different league. Would love one.

Some older members on here will remember Phatgixer who passed away a few years ago.

He had a red SL65 and I have fond memories of a passenger ride in it at a VMAX event one Sunday at Bruntingthorpe.

We were roof down doing 190 and he had the F1 playing on the TV.

Sounded amazing.

Was this the one Top Gear did the tug-of-war demonstration with?

Remember having a discussion with my Mech Eng tutor at the time, he couldn't get his head round why or how the car lost.

Bit worrying really considering his job.

That is fantastic and at that price, quite a bargain.

Almost 20 years old and with a bhp figure that can still pretty much compete today.

£144K in today's money is close to £240K.

Wonderful car. There is a fella on YouTube testing one, he says the performance is astonishing.

But I can’t help but think that an SL55 would be all the SL you need for half the price.

love that - but I'm always very OCD about having the right alloys on a car, were they available on that? I prefer the multispokes but I'm nit-picking, that's a lovely thing

I do indeed, didn't he pick it up about 24hrs beforehand as well?

Lovely car that, wonder where it is now, looked great in red.
