DK Engineering announces partnership with McMurtry

DK will be the exclusive UK agent for McMurtry Automotive and its incredible Spéirling

Though 2022’s Festival of Speed seems almost like ancient history, the sensational hillclimb run by the McMurtry Spéirling feels like it happened last weekend. That’s what a 39.08-second run in a car like this will do, the experience imprinted on the mind of everyone who witnessed it. If McMurtry was somewhat at the fringes of niche interest before that Goodwood weekend, its work was much more widely known after it.

In fact, such has been the interest in the Spéirling EV that DK Engineering has now agreed a commercial relationship with McMurtry Automotive. DK will be the exclusive agent in the UK for the burgeoning company, which is some vote of confidence given DK has been around for almost 50 years and McMurtry was created in 2016. The teams will now work together to bring the Spéirling to market in the UK.

DK’s James Cottingham said of the deal: “At our core, DK is an engineering company and it is amazing to see what McMurtry are achieving. I love what the team is doing, using electricity, but taking a different approach, rather than simply following the crowd. There is a huge respect for the work they have already carried out and the performance being achieved with the Spéirling, approaching that of Formula 1 around circuits, using electricity. “We feel it will be a great fit with our client base – for those who have an electric car scratch to itch, but who haven’t been intrigued or interested in anything offered previously. The team is taking the technology to the next level and we are proud to be a part of this exciting journey with the future projects, as the exclusive agent for the UK, and to support McMurtry as a revolutionary British business.”

Nice to kick off the new year with some good news, right? Though there’s no word yet on fixed UK availability, don’t forget how quickly McMurtry moves; a couple of years ago there can’t have been many outside of the company with knowledge of this fascinating little EV, and now it’s set to be sold through one of the country’s preeminent supercar specialists after an astonishing Goodwood record. The sky’s the limit for this time in 2024.

These would make an interesting one make series, but wouldn't last many laps on present format. Nice to see DK looking to the future.

I love this car, and hopefully the backing of DK will help it see production (not that i can afford it!)

Stunning piece of engineering but - serious questions - what on earth would you do with it?

Is the aspect ratio wrong with those pictures? Like when widescreen 16:9 is squashed to 4:3? If not, that car looks weird af

It's an excercise in engineering at it's finest with the driving force being Sir Davids long standing interest in pushing the boundaries of what is possible engineering wise. He is a very clever and creative engineer who attracts and mentors very clever people all based in the UK. We should be cheering it as a great piece of british engineering creativity.
I worked for Renishaw back in the 80's and saw him at work first hand, he's a man to be admired.

I totally accept all that but that doesn't answer Vee12's question - what on earth would you do with it? You'd feel a bit of a plum turning up to a hill climb and not smashing the hill record no?

Up close the details are great. Those wheels and brakes are pure porn. Serious sized stoppers for such little mass. Amazing.

Fair point, one car race series would make sense, bit too fast for track days or mixed racing of any kind I would think. Not sure how many laps between charges though.

McMurtry state on their own website that if it ran at GT4 car pace it would only last 25 minutes. GT4 races are usually much longer than 25 minutes, so in it's present format it would be quite inept at racing.

To be fair if it really can last 25 minutes at race pace (60kWh battery?) then a series would absolutely be possible. At that kind of pace I think my head would be frazzled after about 10 minutes though! Oh wait at GT4 pace? Does that mean with the performance turned down?

So what money do we think they could (possibly) be?

Hard to think of a price that would suit.

Is this the thing with the downforce fan? If so I hope someone round here buys one and cleans all the grit out of the potholes.

Very fast, very tech-heavy, and very cool.

But utterly, UTTERLY pointless, IMO. Even if you could buy one, and it was road legal, you'd be hustling it along, you'd barely get warmed up before you needed to charge it. And on a track you'd get maybe half a dozen laps in before you were looking to plug it in. I just can't see the point of it, with it's current battery.

But that Goodwood "lap" is amazing.

Given that they already sell expensive things that never get driven, what's another expensive thing that will never get driven? :P

I love it. Reminds me of first year (old school) industrial design before you grasp proportion and perspective in your renderings hehe
