Just replaced my car with a new one, so older car is no longer insured.

However I do need to drive it occasionally (get it cleaned up ready to sell, test drives, etc) so looking to insure it only for the days I drive it.

My current insurer Admiral will insure it for £30 a day. It's a 2013 Audi A5.

Just wanted to know if there were any other companies that you'd recommend that may insure it for less. I've had a quick google but nothing that would beat £30 (which seems quite high to me).

I use Cuvva app when I need temporary insurance. Good price, and efficient. Do it all from your mobile phone via the app. Once registered and set up it takes seconds to get a quick policy

no worries. Let me know how you get on - should be much cheaper than you've previously stated!

Stating the obvious, but you won't be covered for fire or theft on the days you're not insured.

So they've quoted me slightly higher, £32!

But tbh, I do like how slick their app is. You are right it seems very quick to get insured, much quicker than calling up Admiral. I also like that I can insurer for number of hours too which is very good.

I tried a few other quotes and around £30 seems to be the standard.

Think I'll use this app going forward!

That is a very good point.

You reckon it's worth adding on to my policy for fire and theft only?

Thats interesting. It usually charges me about £3 per hour, or about £9 per day for any cars. It is location dependant so perhaps being in rural Scotland is cheaper than where you are? London?

Also - i'm in my 40's with a clean licence which might make a difference too. Wonder where you fall in this ...

If I were you I'd look into temporarily adding the old car to the new policy.

Are you getting a quote for the whole day? I use Cuvva occasionally and literally just use it for the minutes that I'm driving, the cost is usually much less than £30. That's the main benefit of it for me - why pay for 24hrs of cover if you're only actually driving the car for 3 hours.

Oh wow that is cheap! Mine is about £10/hour.

I just tried on an old Honda civic and even that's £25 per day.

I can't think why such a big price difference compared to yours. I am in midlands (Sutton Coldfield), 36 with clean licence so not that far off yours. It must be location

Yes exactly that , I mentioned that above what I liked about Cuvva. Lets you insure by the hour rather than whole day. Very cool

Just doing the same thing for my wife. New car arrived on 20th Dec.

Cost us £25 to have the old car on the policy alongside the new car through to 31st January. Why on earth mess around doing a day or an hour at a time?

The obvious is it's not legal at all unless also SORN'd when it's not insured, see ‘continuous insurance enforcement’: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/uninsured-veh...

Yup. Cuvva and the like are designed for people borrowing cars that are already insured to other people. Unless SORNed it's illegal for a car to be uninsured.

Worth asking but unlikely to be cheaper than fully comp. As above, it may work out cheapest and least hassle to just keep the car insured, either on a standalone policy or multi-car deal.

You are right (and others who mentioned above).

It's an additional £134 for me to add the car as fully comp but does make sense for peace of mind and save having to faff around. It's for 151 days so I guess if I sell it sooner I can get a refund for the remaining term

Surely it would be cheaper to just pay for multicar insurance? You get all the benefits of full cover and if you do need to use it then you can. That's what I've done with my summer car. Cheaper to pay the insurance for the year than it is to pay for it taken out for 10 days a year.

This is why the likes of We Buy Any Car and their ilk have become popular.
By the time you've faffed about with insuring, SORNing, reinsuring, reSORNing a couple of times you might as well take the potential financial hit and get rid of the car the same afternoon.

For those that easily get stressed, maybe.

But it really isn't too much faffing around. For £134 I've now insured my vehicle.

We buy any car are offering me £8.5k. Average price on auto-trader seems to be approx £13k. For £4-5k I'm definitely putting up with the 'faff'

WBAC are usually quite a lot worse than Motorway according to quite a few threads I've read, but of course £4K is worth some work/stress.
