Assign private plate to car with a private plate?

I've just bought a new plate to put on my car. The car already has a private plate on it, which I want to retain.

Can I assign the new plate and put the other on retention in one process?

Or, must I put the current plate on retention, wait for a new v5 with the original registration on it before I can assign the newly purchased plate to the car?

Never had to do it before!

Have a look at the online form. They're user-friendly. They will almost undoubtedly cater for such an eventuality and talk you through it.

Plate on the car on retention. Pay £80. Wait for V5c to arrive (usually within a week). Assign other plate from retention certificate (fee already paid, obviously).

No other way of doing it if you want to retain the first plate.
