With all the talk of V8's and Corvettes in the GG this past week. I wonder what the divide is on PH on who owns/has owned a V8 powered car?

We all know in the US of A V8's are far more common place. Especially in past decades. But in the UK (and wider EU) they have generally been more the preserve of the luxury sector and more expensive vehicles. Meaning that as a rule they have a more desirable dream car allure.

And often the easiest way to sample such an engine over here, is by means of a very muted, refined one in a large heavy non sporting vehicle.

SUV: Range Rover, imported from a Belgian compound and reportedly the seized property of a suspected terrorist.

Saloon: not big, but a Daimler V8 250 (Mk II Jaaaaag)

Forgot to mention: I went gliding once with a former girlfriend and the launch winch was powered by what I was told was a big block Pontiac V8 on open headers. Whatever it was, it sounded like a Can Am car.

1x 4.0 & 1x 4.4 BMWs (both Tourings).
1x 4.2 & 1x 5.0 Jags (one saloon, one coupe).

Jag V8s FTW.

Range Rover Classic 3.5 V8
Defender/Ninety 3.5 V8
C5 RS6 Avant 4.2 twin turbo V8
Defender/Ninety 4.0 V8
Discovery 3 4.4 V8
C5 RS6 Avant 4.2 twin turbo V8

There may be a pattern here, although I've now sold the lot and am concentrating on getting V8s out of my system as the fuel economy has been horrific on all of them!

Big saloon. Mercedes C63.

But not for long as it was bought with my ears and not my brain, despite the soundtrack, it wasn’t enjoyable to drive fast.. It also had electrical gremlins that resulted in a refund.

Almost pulled the button on a Mustang or F Type, but flip flopped again Into a Cayman. Which I am also finding a bit Meh!

So, I may be back for another look )again).

Jag XFR - Saloon
Jag F-Type R - GT
BMW X5M - SUV

The Jag engines were subline and i definitely see myself in a SVR in the future, be it F-Pace or F-Type.
X5M was insanely quick, felt much quicker than the Jag, but it was quiet, too "refined" and lacked any charisma.
As much as i liked the outright performance of the X5M, i doubt i will be in another M car.

Audi A6 4.2 - looked like a rep mobile, but fun to drive.
Used to just drive it around at lunchbreak at work to hear the noise.

C5 is a wonderful car with a great LS1 engine (Z06 even faster).

Late C3s have emission controls and my particular one was a bit of a dog. Plenty of good ones out there for a price though.

While the idea of a V8 is incredibly appealing, fuel costs aside, I can't get around the borkage factor. Audi S4, S5, Jags are all within that magic 10k budget, but I'm just too scared to pull the trigger...

What I'd really love is an S550 Mustang in manual, but.... Alas that is but a pipe dream at present.
