BMW M3 Competition Touring (G81) | PH Video

Now it's time for the real test - bring in the dog!

Back in those glum days of 2020, you might remember a series of stories on PH called ‘The Road Not Taken’. Unable to leave the house much and without cars to drive, we had to get creative with content ideas, and writing about concepts that didn’t quite make it - and very much should have - seemed as good a hook as any.

The BMW M3 Touring was one of those great ‘what if?’ concepts, the glorious grey E46 that BMW had built at the turn of the century yet kept to themselves until the M3’s 30th birthday in 2016, as if ashamed about having created something so awesome and kept it from the world. Back when I was also writing about the 500hp Volvo C30 and Clio R.S.16, the M3 Touring seemed equally far-fetched: the M SUVs were going great guns, the M5 Touring hadn’t existed for more than a decade, and it was hardly like the M3 and M4 had ever struggled to sell without an estate variant. It just wasn’t going to happen. That E46 could live with cars like the E31 M8 as one of BMW’s better one-offs, and those who wanted a compact, rapid, all-wheel drive estate could buy an Audi, Alpina, or AMG.

Yet here we are, less than three years later, with a PH YouTube video in the UK of the actual G81 BMW M3 Competition Touring. I still can’t quite believe it happened, and I suspect some of that astonished glee might come through in the video. For everyone across the world that loves M cars and love estates, this is a huge deal. We’re on our sixth M3 (or M4) cabriolet, and finally the Touring is here - better late than never at all, eh?

You'll have read already that the M3 is a pretty epic device, bringing together the ferocious ability and distinct character of the saloon and coupe with the coolest bodystyle around. It really does look the business, too. That’s what we’ve aimed to capture in this video; hopefully, a big road trip feature will follow in time, showing off every facet of the car’s skillset in a longer look - for now, it’s straight into the nitty gritty. We wanted to do this video as soon as you wanted to see it. Enjoy.

I think it is totally wonderful!!

The price though, bloody hell, over 100k! I have no idea who the people are that can afford a car of that value. Yes, I am sure it will be available on some massive balloon PCP deal but that will still be well in excess of £1500PM at a wild guess.

Which might be 1% or 10% or 50% if someone’s disposable monthly income.

I’m glad people are buying them, hopefully I can get a purple or green one when (if) they drop under £50k!

Am sure it is a very capable car but that grille haha. The black wheels and privacy glass are not great either.

Indeed, I just don't know anyone with that kind of disposable in this day and age but hope many thousands sell so the second hand market is flooded with cheap ones nobody wants when the electric age comes!

Top lurking!

Car Throttle ran this same car as a story with prices going up to £116,000 which is absolutely insane money for a 3 series, regardless of how rare and wonderful it may be.

Maybe it is time to stop whining about the grille?
For me, it looks just fine, absolutely no problem with it. BMW shape, is suits the car, which I think looks fantastic.

To be fair it's the first M3 touring ever made so it's going to get some attention regardless of it's looks. Personally having seen one in the flesh I think it looks awful and as mentioned the price is just mad but I'm sure they'll sell a few. No one can deny BMW have really pushed the boundaries with this car in every sense but for me the looks are a step too far. It's the first M3 that I haven't instantly wanted to own.

It's never time to stop moaning about this design awfulness......

Nice, but 1800+kg...

ok, I still would like such S58? i6 turbo engine in say a way lighter Z3 coupe or Z4 coupe, I think for that much torque the Z4 coupe body with its high nm/degree torsion resistance would be the better choice,

but boy, such engine in one of those 2 Z variants will be awesome, ok not to show under the bonnet, because it looks like not show worthy, so keep the lid on and Go.

It looks huge. I wonder how close it is in dimensions to the E60 M5 touring.

I am pretty sure it starts at £80k with a huge std spec.

Press cars are always loaded with unnecessary stuff.

Doesn't make it any better though... time has not been a good healer for that grill. A shame, as it's otherwise an awesome car, albeit well out of reach for me.

Gearbox aside I would take the E60 M5 any day of the week, trading a few BHP and a few more MPG for that V10!!!

You are right probably identical size and weight now .

It looks like inflation has been kind to BMW prices then if the M3 Touring is the size of an old M5 Touring. Those started at £65k I think. Quite a few years ago.
